Specimen: Turtle and Crocodile Remains
Name: Trionyx / Emys (Turtle) and Diplocynodon (Crocodile)
Age: Oligocene
Location: Isle of Wight, UK
Size : 31 x 15 x 11mm (1.22 x 0.59 x 0.43 inches)
These are fossilised remains of prehistoric Turtles and Crocodiles. Turtles and crocodiles are two species still alive today that have kept a ‘prehistoric’ look in their appearance, and to be honest not a great deal has changed in the way they have evolved, though one change that has occurred is size. A recent fossil discovery uncovered a turtle that was the size of a small car, and is believed to have feasted on such animals as crocodiles, rather unlike the characteristics of turtles today!!! Though crocodiles were just as menacing, with some species growing to up to 30ft in length and weighing 3 tonnes.
These turtle and crocodile remains can be Bone, Scutes, Carapace & Armour.
Generally with these type of remains only the Plates and Scutes can be identified as to which is croc and which is turtle, as all the other pieces are very similar in such condition. This is why we sell these pieces as Crocodile/Turtle remains, and at the low price they are, because most are fragments or worn specimens difficult to fully identify which species they belong to.
ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.
