Specimen: Euhedral Quartz Geode ‘Potato Stone”

Type: Mineral/Crystal

Location: Sidmouth, Devon, UK

Scale cube=1cm: Full sizing please see photo.

Euhedral Quartz – ‘Potato Stone”, Triassic, Sidmouth, Devon, UK.

Quartz replacement of a Sabkha Anydrite Nodule, like those of a modern Sabkha.

The type of precursors are found today in the Dukhan Sabkha of Qatar. Modern desert sabkhas are often ‘Khaki’ (light brown) in colour. The hydrated iron oxide (goethite) is converted by heat under burial to the reddish colour. The Trisssic mudstone probably was a filthy brown mud, but now looks quite attractive as hard mudstone. The calcium sulphate of the nodule has been partially replaced by euhedral quartz crystals growing in from the margin (pH controlled). Residual secondary gypsum, has very recently been dissolved away to leave a hollow centre.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.
