Description

This listing is for the exact miniature bicycle pin, brooch or badge shown in the photographs. The object is a cast white-metal novelty bicycle fitting from Otley in West Yorkshire and is attributed to the late Victorian or early twentieth-century period. Its compact cycling motif reflects the enormous popularity and cultural importance of the bicycle during an era of rapid technological and social change.

The modern safety bicycle developed during the late nineteenth century, replacing the high-wheel ordinary with a more practical design using similarly sized wheels and chain drive. Cycling quickly became a popular form of transport and recreation. Clubs, races, touring groups and bicycle manufacturers all contributed to a new visual culture in which miniature cycles appeared on badges, jewellery, advertising pieces and personal accessories.

Small bicycle pins and brooches could be worn as decorative novelties, expressions of enthusiasm for cycling or souvenirs connected with clubs, events and manufacturers. White metal was a useful material for inexpensive decorative objects because it could be cast efficiently into detailed forms and then finished or plated. The surviving object should be assessed from the photographs for its precise alloy colour, casting detail, attachment remains and surface condition.

The late Victorian to early twentieth-century date places this piece within the first great cycling boom. Bicycles offered practical personal mobility and became especially significant in discussions of changing leisure, travel and independence. A miniature bicycle object therefore has interest beyond its size: it represents a period when cycling was both fashionable and transformative.

Please inspect every photograph carefully. They show the actual pin or badge you will receive, not a stock image or substitute. The images document the bicycle form, visible casting, front and reverse surfaces, attachment points, patina, corrosion, wear, bending and any incomplete areas. Full sizing is shown in the photographs, so use the pictured scale or measurements to understand its miniature dimensions.

The item has not been aggressively polished. Historic surface colour and wear are part of its authenticity and help communicate its age. Small cast objects may display seams, irregular edges or variation in detail caused by their original manufacturing process. Later wear can soften raised features, while burial or river exposure may create staining and mineral deposits. These characteristics should be considered part of the object’s individual history.

This piece would suit collections of Victorian jewellery, cycling memorabilia, transport history, novelty badges, British metal-detected or river-found objects and social-history miniatures. It is also an engaging display item for a cyclist, bicycle historian or collector of unusual personal accessories.

A generic certificate of authenticity with a lifetime authenticity guarantee is included. Keep the certificate and recorded Otley provenance with the object to preserve its collecting history. The artefact will be packed carefully for transit.

The exact miniature bicycle pin pictured will be supplied. Its recognisable form, West Yorkshire association and connection with the formative age of popular cycling make it a distinctive historic collectable.
