Description

This listing features a VERY RARE and scientifically notable fossil of the heteromorph ammonite Discoscaphites gulosus, a unique marine cephalopod from the Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous. This authentic and expertly prepared specimen comes from the Fox Hills Formation, part of the Pierre Shale Group, discovered in South Dakota, USA — a region internationally recognised for preserving marine ecosystems from the closing chapter of the Mesozoic Era.

Discoscaphites gulosus is a member of the family Scaphitidae, within the superfamily Scaphitoidea and order Ammonitida. Its shell features a distinct heteromorph shape, beginning with a coiled early section followed by a more loosely curved final whorl. This morphology suggests adaptations for specialized locomotion or environmental niches in the retreating Western Interior Seaway.

Geological & Scientific Details:

  • Scientific Name: Discoscaphites gulosus
  • Fossil Type: Heteromorph Ammonite (Extinct Marine Cephalopod)
  • Geological Period: Cretaceous
  • Stage: Maastrichtian (approx. 72–66 million years ago)
  • Formation: Fox Hills Formation (part of the Pierre Shale Group)
  • Location Found: South Dakota, United States
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Scaphitoidea
  • Family: Scaphitidae
  • Morphological Features: Moderately uncoiled shell, strong ribbing, narrow aperture, terminal whorl with slight curvature
  • Depositional Environment: Shallow marine and estuarine deltaic settings of the Western Interior Seaway

This genus is especially significant due to its appearance near the K–Pg boundary, with Discoscaphites gulosus sometimes found in strata slightly above the extinction horizon, making it a key subject of interest in studies on ammonite survival and extinction dynamics.

All of our Fossils are 100% Genuine Specimens & come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Please Note:

  • Scale Rule Squares / Cube = 1cm – full sizing is shown in the photo
