Mineral Type & Crystal Structure

Tiger Eye is a variety of quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂) that belongs to the trigonal crystal system. It is classified as a pseudomorph, meaning it forms when one mineral replaces another while retaining the original structure. In the case of tiger eye, quartz gradually replaces fibrous crocidolite (a blue asbestos mineral), preserving the fibrous texture.

The golden to brown colour results from iron oxidation within the fibrous structure. One of the most distinctive features of tiger eye is its chatoyancy, often referred to as the “cat’s eye” effect. This optical phenomenon occurs when light reflects off the aligned fibrous inclusions within the stone, creating a moving band of light across the surface.

With a Mohs hardness of approximately 7, tiger eye is durable and takes a high polish, enhancing both its colour and reflective qualities.

Obelisk Shape & Craftsmanship

This specimen has been carved into an obelisk point, featuring four polished faces that taper upward to a defined apex. The flat base allows stable display on shelves, desks, or in display cabinets.

The obelisk form enhances the visual movement of the chatoyant band. As the stone is rotated under light, the golden sheen shifts across the surface, highlighting the fibrous internal structure. The polished finish intensifies the contrast between darker brown layers and brighter golden streaks.

Each tiger eye obelisk is unique, with natural variations in band thickness, colour saturation, and chatoyant intensity.

Geological Formation

Tiger Eye forms in metamorphic environments where crocidolite fibres are gradually replaced by silica-rich fluids. During this process, quartz crystallises while preserving the parallel fibrous structure of the original mineral. Iron within the crocidolite oxidises, producing the characteristic golden-brown tones.

Tiger eye deposits are commonly found in regions such as South Africa, Western Australia, India, and Namibia. It is often associated with other silica-rich rocks and metamorphic formations.

The stone’s fibrous internal structure is responsible for both its strength and its distinctive optical effect.

Physical & Optical Characteristics

Tiger Eye is typically opaque and displays a silky, reflective sheen when polished. The chatoyant band appears as a narrow streak of light that moves across the surface depending on viewing angle and lighting conditions.

Natural inclusions, subtle surface lines, and internal banding are part of the stone’s geological history and confirm its authenticity.

Traditional & Cultural Associations

Historically, tiger eye has been used in carvings, jewellery, and ornamental objects. In spiritual traditions, it is sometimes symbolically associated with courage and focus. These associations are cultural and belief-based rather than scientific.

Ideal for Collectors & Display

This Tiger Eye Obelisk Point makes a striking addition to any mineral collection or decorative arrangement. Its warm golden tones and dynamic light reflection create a strong visual focal point in both modern and traditional settings.

You will receive the exact specimen shown in the photographs, securely packaged and presented with a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee card. A genuine tiger eye quartz obelisk, selected for quality, colour, and craftsmanship.
