Geological & Scientific Information

Tektites are natural glass objects formed by the intense heat and pressure of meteorite impacts on Earth’s surface. They are typically black or dark brown, with a distinctive glassy texture and aerodynamic shapes caused by molten rock cooling as it re-enters the atmosphere. Chemically, tektites are nearly identical to terrestrial rocks, but their formation process under cosmic impact conditions distinguishes them from volcanic glasses such as obsidian.

Tektites occur in well-defined regions known as strewn fields, scattered across the globe, including Southeast Asia, Australasia, North America, and parts of Europe and Africa. Each strewn field represents the debris from a different ancient impact event. The most famous and rare subtypes include:

  • Moldavite (Czech Republic, Eastern Europe): Emerald green and highly prized for jewellery.
  • Libyan Desert Glass (Egypt/Libya): Pale yellow to golden glass, linked to meteorite impacts in the Sahara.
  • Darwin Glass (Tasmania, Australia): Green-grey glass fragments from ancient impacts.

Their formation remains a subject of scientific debate. The dominant theory is that they formed when molten terrestrial rock was ejected by a massive meteorite impact, then cooled rapidly upon re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere. However, alternative theories, including that of former NASA astronomer Dr. John A. O’Keefe, suggest possible lunar origins from ancient volcanic activity or impacts, with tektites once orbiting Earth as a ring before falling to the surface.

Collectors & Metaphysical Information

Tektites have long fascinated both scientists and collectors. Their unusual shapes, glossy textures, and extraterrestrial connection make them prized items in any meteorite or mineral collection. Due to their cosmic origin, tektites are also popular in metaphysical practices, believed to:

  • Enhance spiritual growth and psychic abilities.
  • Connect with extraterrestrial energies.
  • Aid in astral travel and higher consciousness exploration.
  • Promote protection and grounding.
