Geological & Scientific Information
Talc is a mineral composed of hydrated magnesium silicate with the formula Mg3Si4O10(OH)2. It is the softest known mineral on Earth, defined as 1 on the Mohs scale of hardness, and is notable for its smooth, greasy feel and ability to be easily scratched with a fingernail. Talc occurs in a wide range of colours, from white to grey, green, and even brown, depending on its impurities. Its streak is characteristically white.
Talc commonly forms in metamorphic rocks, particularly in association with minerals such as chlorite, serpentine, dolomite, and magnesite. It is often found in geological environments rich in magnesium. The specimen offered here originates from Egypt, where green talc occurs within metamorphosed ultramafic rocks.
Talc has been widely used for thousands of years. In powdered form, it is most famously known as talcum powder (baby powder). Its softness and greasy texture make it instantly recognisable to collectors and geologists alike.
