Natural Sunstone – Tanzanian Feldspar Mineral Specimen

This genuine Sunstone specimen from Tanzania is a natural feldspar mineral selected for its colour, internal shimmer, and collector appeal. Each piece measures approximately 5–15mm, making it ideal for small mineral collections, gem study trays, jewellery projects, or curated crystal displays. The photograph shows an example of the actual specimen you will receive. Please refer to the listing images for full sizing and natural variation within this size range.

Your Sunstone crystal includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming it is a 100% genuine natural mineral specimen.

Mineral Species & Classification

Sunstone is a variety of feldspar, most commonly part of the plagioclase feldspar series, typically classified as oligoclase or andesine depending on its sodium-calcium composition. Feldspar minerals are tectosilicates, forming a major portion of the Earth’s continental crust.

Plagioclase Sunstone crystallises in the triclinic crystal system, characterised by two cleavage directions intersecting at nearly right angles.

Key mineralogical properties include:

  • Mineral Group: Feldspar (Tectosilicate)

  • Crystal System: Triclinic

  • Hardness: 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale

  • Lustre: Vitreous

  • Transparency: Transparent to translucent

  • Cleavage: Two directions, nearly 90°

Geological Formation – Tanzania

Tanzanian Sunstone forms within igneous rock environments, where molten magma cools slowly enough for feldspar crystals to develop. During crystallisation, tiny inclusions of reflective minerals such as hematite or native copper can become trapped inside the growing feldspar crystal.

These microscopic plate-like inclusions create the characteristic aventurescence effect — a natural shimmering or sparkling appearance when the stone is rotated under light. This optical phenomenon is entirely geological in origin and forms during crystal growth.

The deposits in Tanzania are known for producing Sunstone with attractive warm tones and visible internal sparkle, making them desirable among mineral and gemstone collectors.

Colour & Optical Characteristics

Tanzanian Sunstone typically displays warm hues ranging from pale peach and golden orange to deeper coppery or reddish tones. In smaller 5–15mm specimens, the aventurescent shimmer may appear as subtle flashes of light across the surface or internally when viewed under direct lighting.

Natural features may include:

  • Internal reflective inclusions

  • Light colour zoning

  • Minor growth lines or natural inclusions

  • Slight surface texture from natural formation

No artificial dyes or enhancements have been applied. Variations in shimmer intensity and colour are natural characteristics of authentic Sunstone.

Collecting & Display Appeal

Despite its compact 5–15mm size, Tanzanian Sunstone remains visually striking due to its internal sparkle and warm colour palette. These smaller specimens are ideal for:

  • Mineral specimen trays

  • Feldspar study collections

  • Lapidary and jewellery making

  • Educational geology kits

  • Small display jars or curated crystal boxes

Sunstone is traditionally associated in some spiritual practices with vitality and positivity; these associations are belief-based rather than scientific.

Authenticity & Individual Selection

Each Sunstone specimen is a carefully chosen genuine mineral from Tanzania. The listing photograph shows an example of the actual specimen you will receive within the stated 5–15mm size range. Please review all images for scale and natural variation.

Every purchase includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming its genuine natural origin.
