Mineral Type & Scientific Classification
Tiger Eye is a variety of Quartz (Silicon Dioxide – SiO₂) composed of microcrystalline quartz with a preserved fibrous structure. While often grouped with chalcedony due to its microcrystalline nature, Tiger Eye is more accurately described as a pseudomorphic quartz replacement of crocidolite, a fibrous amphibole mineral.
Quartz crystallises in the trigonal crystal system, though Tiger Eye forms in massive, compact aggregates rather than distinct crystal points.
The formation process involves pseudomorphism, where silica-rich fluids gradually replace crocidolite fibres while maintaining their original alignment. Iron present within the structure oxidises during this transformation, producing the characteristic golden to brown tones.
With a Mohs hardness of approximately 6.5–7, Tiger Eye is durable and well suited to carving and polishing.
Chatoyancy & Optical Characteristics
Tiger Eye is renowned for its chatoyancy, commonly referred to as the “cat’s eye effect.” This optical phenomenon creates a bright, moving band of reflected light that shifts across the surface as the stone is rotated.
This obelisk may display:
• Golden brown to deep honey hues
• Distinct parallel fibrous banding
• Silky lustre with reflective sheen
• Opaque body colour with polished finish
The obelisk’s flat faces enhance the directional light reflection, allowing the chatoyant band to move fluidly across multiple surfaces. Natural variations in fibre density and colour zoning ensure that each specimen is visually unique.
Geological Formation
Tiger Eye forms in metamorphic rock environments, typically within iron-rich formations. The original fibrous crocidolite becomes encased in silica-rich fluids, which slowly replace the amphibole structure molecule by molecule.
This process preserves the fibrous alignment responsible for chatoyancy while converting the material into quartz. Iron oxidation during geological alteration contributes to the warm golden and brown colouring.
Major deposits are historically associated with metamorphic terrains where silica and iron were present in abundance.
Obelisk Form & Traditional Associations
The obelisk shape features a flat base and four tapered sides that converge at a defined apex. This geometric form allows for stable upright display and emphasises the stone’s fibrous structure and reflective bands.
Tiger Eye has been traditionally associated in spiritual symbolism with confidence and focus. These interpretations are cultural and symbolic rather than scientific.
This Tiger Eye Obelisk Point is ideal for:
• Mineral and crystal collections
• Quartz enthusiasts
• Decorative display in home or office
• Meditation or symbolic environments
