Mineral Species & Chemical Composition
Rubellite is the pink to red variety of Elbaite Tourmaline, a complex borosilicate mineral belonging to the tourmaline group. Its general chemical formula is Na(Li,Al)₃Al₆(BO₃)₃Si₆O₁₈(OH)₄. The vivid pink to deep reddish tones are primarily caused by manganese within the crystal structure.
Tourmaline crystallises in the trigonal crystal system, forming elongated prismatic crystals often characterised by strong vertical striations along the length of the crystal. This linear growth pattern is a key identifying feature of tourmaline specimens.
Rubellite ranks 7–7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it a durable mineral suitable for display and collection.
Geological Formation – Brazil
Brazil is globally recognised for its pegmatite deposits, which produce a wide variety of gem-quality tourmalines, including Rubellite. These crystals form in granitic pegmatites, where slow cooling of mineral-rich magma allows large and well-formed crystals to develop.
During the late stages of pegmatite crystallisation, boron-rich fluids contribute to the formation of complex borosilicate minerals such as tourmaline. The presence of manganese in the chemical environment results in the strong pink to red hues associated with Rubellite.
Brazilian Rubellite is particularly valued for its saturation, clarity, and well-formed prismatic structures. Associated minerals in pegmatite environments may include quartz, feldspar, lepidolite, spodumene, and mica.
Colour, Structure & Optical Characteristics
This Rubellite specimen displays the rich pink to reddish tones that distinguish it from lighter pink tourmaline varieties. Depending on lighting conditions, colour intensity may appear deeper or brighter due to natural pleochroism, a property in which the crystal shows slightly different colours when viewed from different angles.
Key mineralogical properties include:
-
Mineral Group: Tourmaline
-
Species: Elbaite (Rubellite variety)
-
Crystal System: Trigonal
-
Colour: Pink to deep red
-
Lustre: Vitreous
-
Transparency: Transparent to translucent
-
Hardness: 7–7.5 Mohs
Natural internal inclusions, growth zoning, or surface striations are typical of authentic tourmaline crystals and reflect their geological formation. No artificial colour treatments or enhancements are applied.
Collecting & Display Appeal
Rubellite is highly sought after by mineral collectors due to its vivid colour, relative rarity in strong red tones, and association with classic Brazilian pegmatite deposits. Its elongated crystal habit and natural striations create strong visual impact when displayed in a mineral cabinet or curated crystal collection.
Rubellite is traditionally associated in spiritual practices with vitality and passion; these associations are cultural rather than scientific.
With its bold colour and impressive 84mm size, this specimen makes a striking centrepiece within any mineral display.
Authenticity & Individual Selection
This Rubellite crystal is a carefully selected genuine specimen. The listing photograph shows an example of the actual piece you will receive, ensuring clarity and confidence in your purchase. Please review all images for precise sizing and visual characteristics.
Each specimen is supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming its genuine natural origin.
A remarkable example of Brazilian Elbaite Tourmaline, this 84mm Rubellite crystal represents the complex chemistry and slow crystallisation processes of pegmatite environments, making it an exceptional addition to any serious mineral collection.
