Mineral Classification & Chemical Composition

Roscoelite is a rare vanadium-rich mica belonging to the phyllosilicate group. Its generalised chemical formula is commonly written as K(V³⁺,Al,Mg)₂AlSi₃O₁₀(OH)₂, reflecting its potassium content and the substitution of vanadium within the mica structure. The presence of vanadium is responsible for its characteristic green colouration.

Like other micas, Roscoelite crystallises in the monoclinic crystal system and exhibits perfect basal cleavage, allowing it to split into thin sheets or flakes. It typically occurs in platy, foliated or micaceous aggregates rather than well-formed standalone crystals.

The colour ranges from deep emerald green to olive or dark green tones, often with a subtle pearly to vitreous lustre on cleavage surfaces. The mica structure gives Roscoelite a layered appearance, sometimes with a slight reflective sheen when viewed under direct light.

Geological Formation & Occurrence

Roscoelite forms in hydrothermal and metamorphic environments, particularly in association with vanadium-bearing deposits. It is often found in quartz veins, altered ultramafic rocks, and sedimentary formations enriched with vanadium minerals.

The mineral typically develops where vanadium-rich fluids interact with aluminium and silica-bearing host rocks. Over time, these conditions allow vanadium to substitute into the mica structure, producing the distinctive green vanadium mica known as Roscoelite.

Roscoelite may occur alongside minerals such as quartz, calcite, barite, gold, and other vanadium-bearing species, depending on the deposit type. Its occurrence is relatively uncommon compared to more widespread mica minerals like muscovite or biotite, contributing to its appeal among specialised mineral collectors.

Physical Characteristics & Structure

This Roscoelite specimen displays:

  • Natural green colour derived from vanadium content

  • Layered micaceous structure

  • Pearly to vitreous lustre

  • Fine-grained to platy crystal habit

Due to its mica composition, Roscoelite is relatively soft and can show flexible, sheet-like characteristics similar to other phyllosilicates. Its layered structure is a key identifying feature and an important teaching example for mineral classification studies.

No artificial dyes, coatings or enhancements have been applied. The colour and texture are entirely natural.

Collector & Educational Appeal

Roscoelite is considered a speciality mineral due to its vanadium content and relatively limited occurrence. It is particularly valued by collectors interested in:

  • Rare mica species

  • Vanadium-bearing minerals

  • Hydrothermal vein mineralogy

  • Study and reference collections

  • Cabinet display specimens

Its distinctive green tone and micaceous texture make it a visually interesting addition to advanced mineral collections.

Traditional & Cultural Context

In spiritual symbolism, green minerals have traditionally been associated with balance and renewal themes. These interpretations are cultural and symbolic in nature and are not presented as scientific or medical claims.

Authenticity & Assurance

  • 100% genuine natural Roscoelite

  • Vanadium-rich mica mineral

  • Phyllosilicate crystal structure

  • Carefully selected individual specimen

  • Includes Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card

  • The exact specimen shown in the photographs is the one you will receive

This Roscoelite mineral specimen represents a rare vanadium-bearing mica with distinctive green colouration and layered structure, offering geological significance and strong appeal within specialised mineral collections.
