Mineral Type & Scientific Classification
Red Tiger Eye is a variety of Quartz (Silicon Dioxide – SiO₂) formed through the pseudomorphic replacement of crocidolite fibres by silica. Quartz crystallises in the trigonal crystal system, though Tiger Eye occurs in massive, fibrous aggregates rather than visible crystal points.
The red coloration is typically produced by additional heat exposure, either through natural geological processes or controlled enhancement, which deepens the iron oxidation within the stone. This results in warm red, mahogany, or burgundy hues while preserving the internal fibrous structure responsible for chatoyancy.
With a Mohs hardness of approximately 6.5–7, Red Tiger Eye is durable and well suited for carving into decorative obelisks and towers.
Chatoyancy & Visual Characteristics
The defining feature of Red Tiger Eye is its chatoyancy, commonly referred to as the “cat’s eye effect.” This optical phenomenon produces a shifting band of reflected light that moves across the surface when the stone is rotated under light.
This obelisk may display:
• Deep red to reddish-brown tones
• Parallel fibrous banding
• Silky reflective sheen
• Opaque structure with polished finish
The obelisk’s flat faces enhance the dynamic movement of the chatoyant band, creating visual depth and contrast across multiple surfaces. Natural variations in fibre alignment and colour intensity make each specimen unique.
Geological Formation
Tiger Eye forms in metamorphic rock environments, where fibrous crocidolite (an amphibole mineral) becomes gradually replaced by silica-rich solutions. This pseudomorphic replacement preserves the original fibrous structure while transforming the material into quartz.
Iron present in the original fibres oxidises during formation, contributing to the golden and brown tones seen in standard Tiger Eye. In Red Tiger Eye, additional heat exposure intensifies the red coloration while maintaining the chatoyant effect.
The material used for this obelisk has been cut and polished from naturally formed Tiger Eye.
Obelisk Form & Traditional Associations
The obelisk shape features a flat base and four polished sides that taper toward a defined apex. This geometric design allows stable upright display and highlights the stone’s fibrous structure and reflective bands.
Red Tiger Eye has been traditionally associated in spiritual symbolism with motivation and vitality. These interpretations are cultural and symbolic rather than scientific.
This Red Tiger Eye Obelisk Point is suitable for:
