Geological & Scientific Information:

  • Species: Pseudomercaticeras parvilobum
  • Fossil Type: Ammonite (extinct marine cephalopod)
  • Geological Period: Jurassic
  • Stage: Upper Toarcian (approx. 182.7 to 174.1 million years ago)
  • Location Found: Italy
  • Order: Ammonitida
  • Superfamily: Hildoceratoidea
  • Family: Hildoceratidae
  • Morphology Features:
  • Pseudomercaticeras species are characterised by their moderately involute, compressed shells with gently curved flanks and fine, dense ribbing. This specimen of P. parvilobum shows delicate ornamentation and classic planispiral coiling, with its intricate suture patterns preserved in remarkable detail.
  • Biozone (if applicable): Associated with the Bifrons to Variabilis zones of the Upper Toarcian, which are widely used in European ammonite biostratigraphy.
  • Depositional Environment:
  • These ammonites lived in shallow epicontinental seas with relatively stable conditions, where fine clay and marl sediments settled, leading to the fossil’s high-quality preservation.
  • Scientific Importance:
  • Pseudomercaticeras is a useful biozone marker in Jurassic stratigraphy due to its rapid evolutionary changes and wide geographic distribution across Europe. This species provides insights into marine ecosystem dynamics during the global climatic shifts of the Toarcian.

Additional Notes:

This is a well-preserved and scientifically interesting example of Toarcian ammonite fauna, excellent for collectors, educators, or enthusiasts of Italian Jurassic geology. Its sharp ribbing and form make it ideal for both display and educational purposes.
