RARE FOSSIL AMMONITE – QUENSTEDTOCERAS SUTHERLANDIE – UPPER CALLOVIAN STAGE, JURASSIC – VILLERS-SUR-MER, CALVADOS, FRANCE

This beautifully preserved and scientifically significant fossil is an authentic specimen of Quenstedtoceras sutherlandie, dating to the Upper Callovian stage of the Middle to Late Jurassic, approximately 164–163 million years ago. It was discovered in the marine sedimentary strata near Villers-sur-Mer, Calvados, Normandy, a classic locality well known for its abundant and diverse Jurassic ammonite fauna.

The ammonite originates from the Alice Purnell Collection, a trusted and renowned source of high-quality fossil material. You will receive the exact specimen shown in the photographs, which includes a scale cube (1cm per square) for accurate size reference. As with all our fossils, a Certificate of Authenticity is provided.

  • Class: Cephalopoda
  • Phylum: Mollusca
  • Biozone (probable): Quenstedtoceras lamberti or Pseudocadoceras zone within the Upper Callovian ammonite succession
  • Described by: Originally attributed to Sowerby and refined by Quenstedt in the 19th century

MORPHOLOGICAL FEATURES:

Quenstedtoceras sutherlandie displays a strongly ribbed, involute shell, with well-defined sigmoidal ribs that bifurcate at mid-flank and extend toward the venter. The whorl section is compressed, and the keel is often present but can vary in prominence depending on ontogeny. This species exhibits classic traits of the Cardioceratidae family, known for their tight coiling and intricate ribbing—key indicators of their zonal relevance in Upper Jurassic stratigraphy.

Its striking symmetry and detailed ornamentation make this a valuable specimen for both display and research, especially for collectors of Jurassic ammonites or those focusing on biostratigraphic reference material.
