Description

RARE Fossil Ammonite – Fagesia levis

Geological Period: Cretaceous

Geological Stage: Turonian (~93.9 to 89.8 million years ago)

Locality: Atlas Mountains, Morocco

Fossil Type: Ammonite (Extinct Marine Cephalopod)

Species: Fagesia levis

Family: Acanthoceratidae

Superfamily: Acanthoceratoidea

Order: Ammonitida

Fagesia levis is a noteworthy ammonite species from the Turonian stage of the Late Cretaceous. Belonging to the family Acanthoceratidae, it is characterised by a more compressed, streamlined shell than other Fagesia species, with fine ribbing and a generally smooth, involute coiling. This ammonite would have lived in a warm, shallow epicontinental sea that once covered much of present-day North Africa.

Morphology Features:

  • Medium-sized, moderately involute shell
  • Smooth or weakly ornamented surface with faint ribs
  • Rounded to slightly flattened venter
  • Umbilicus is narrow to moderately open

Depositional Environment:

The fossil was discovered in the marine limestone deposits of the High Atlas Mountains, Morocco—a well-known fossiliferous region that represents a shallow marine platform setting. Sedimentation here was ideal for preserving marine invertebrates like ammonites, molluscs, and echinoderms.

Biostratigraphy and Importance:

Fagesia levis is an important zonal species in the Turonian ammonite biozones used for correlating Cretaceous marine strata across North Africa and parts of Europe. Its presence aids paleontologists in age-dating and interpreting depositional sequences within Turonian marine formations.
