About Canyon Diablo Meteorites

Canyon Diablo is one of the world’s most famous iron meteorites and is directly associated with the creation of Meteor Crater, also known as Barringer Crater, located near Winslow, Arizona. The meteorite impacted Earth approximately 50,000 years ago during the late Pleistocene Epoch, producing one of the best-preserved meteor impact craters on the planet.

The Canyon Diablo meteorite is classified as a coarse octahedrite iron meteorite belonging to the IAB-MG iron meteorite complex. These meteorites formed deep within the cores of ancient differentiated asteroidal bodies during the earliest stages of solar system formation over 4.5 billion years ago.

Fragments from the impact were scattered across the surrounding Arizona desert within a large strewn field around the crater. Canyon Diablo specimens are highly sought after due to their scientific importance, recognisable appearance, and historic connection to one of Earth’s most famous meteorite impact sites.

Meteorite Composition and Structure

Canyon Diablo meteorites are composed primarily of iron and nickel, with significant quantities of meteoritic alloys including kamacite and taenite. Many specimens also contain accessory meteoritic minerals such as troilite, graphite, schreibersite, cohenite, and inclusions of iron sulphides and phosphides.

As a coarse octahedrite, Canyon Diablo meteorites can display internal Widmanstätten structures when cut and etched, produced by the extremely slow cooling of metallic crystals within an asteroid core over millions of years in space. These interlocking crystalline patterns are unique to iron meteorites and cannot form naturally under Earth conditions.

Natural exterior surfaces often show deeply sculpted regmaglypts, impact fracturing, oxidation textures, fusion remnants, and weathering features developed during atmospheric entry and long-term terrestrial exposure in the Arizona desert environment.

The substantial 473g weight gives this specimen an excellent solid feel and strong visual presence, making it an impressive collector-grade meteorite.

Meteor Crater and Historical Importance

The Canyon Diablo impact event played a major role in advancing scientific understanding of meteorite impacts and crater formation. Meteor Crater itself measures approximately 1.2 kilometres in diameter and remains one of the most studied impact structures in the world.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, large quantities of Canyon Diablo fragments were recovered around the crater area, leading to important research into meteoritics, planetary geology, and extraterrestrial mineralogy. The meteorite became especially significant in proving that large impact craters on Earth were formed by cosmic collisions rather than volcanic activity.

Because of this historic importance, Canyon Diablo meteorites remain among the most iconic and recognisable meteorites available to collectors.

Appearance and Natural Features

This specimen displays the classic appearance associated with Canyon Diablo iron meteorites, including natural metallic texture, irregular sculpting, impact-related surface structure, and oxidised desert patina developed during terrestrial weathering.

Colouration may include metallic silver-grey areas, dark brown oxidation, reddish iron weathering tones, and natural surface variation created by both atmospheric entry and long-term exposure within the Arizona desert environment.

Every Canyon Diablo specimen is unique due to the violent fragmentation that occurred during atmospheric breakup and crater impact. Natural surface features and structural textures contribute directly to the individuality and authenticity of the meteorite.

Exceptional Collector and Display Meteorite

Large genuine Canyon Diablo meteorites are highly desirable among meteorite collectors, geology enthusiasts, and natural history collectors due to their scientific significance, historical importance, and unmistakable extraterrestrial origin.

This specimen is ideal for:

  • Meteorite and space rock collections
  • Planetary science collections
  • Natural history displays
  • Museum-style displays
  • Educational geological collections
  • Curiosity cabinets and interior décor
  • Gifts for meteorite collectors and astronomy enthusiasts
