Mineral Identification & Classification
Prehnite is a calcium aluminium silicate mineral with the chemical formula Ca₂Al(AlSi₃O₁₀)(OH)₂. It belongs to the phyllosilicate group, a class of minerals characterised by sheet-like silicate structures. Prehnite crystallises in the orthorhombic crystal system, although well-formed individual crystals are relatively uncommon. It more frequently occurs in botryoidal, globular, stalactitic or massive formations.
As a tumblestone, this specimen has been cut and polished to enhance its smooth texture and natural colour while preserving the integrity of the original mineral. Tumbling does not alter the mineral’s internal composition; it simply refines the surface for handling and display.
Prehnite is typically recognised for its soft green to yellow-green colouration. Some specimens may display pale apple-green tones, while others can appear more translucent with subtle internal clouding. Its colour is generally caused by trace elements within the mineral structure. The polished surface reveals its characteristic vitreous to slightly pearly lustre.
Geological Formation & Occurrence
Prehnite commonly forms in low-grade metamorphic and hydrothermal environments, often associated with basaltic volcanic rocks. It is frequently found lining cavities and fractures within basalt, where mineral-rich fluids have deposited crystals over time.
It may occur alongside minerals such as epidote, calcite, quartz, apophyllite and zeolites. In cavity formations, Prehnite often develops rounded, botryoidal structures that give it a distinctive natural appearance once polished.
Major global sources of Prehnite include South Africa, Mali, Australia, China and parts of the United States. Regardless of origin, Prehnite is valued for its consistent green tones and smooth, waxy finish when polished.
