An end scraper is a deliberately modified stone tool made from a struck flint flake or blade. Its defining feature is a strengthened scraping edge formed across the distal end, opposite the original point at which the blank was struck from its parent core.

The maker then modified the distal end through retouch. Retouch involved removing a sequence of smaller flakes from the margin to create a steep, strong working edge. This edge was less fragile than an unmodified cutting margin and could withstand repeated pressure during scraping.
The pattern, angle and distribution of the retouch reflect deliberate human workmanship. Producing an effective scraper required an understanding of flint fracture as well as careful control over the direction and force of each strike.
