Description

Rough Peridot – Natural Olivine Crystal from Pakistan

This rough Peridot specimen is a genuine natural olivine crystal sourced from Pakistan, a locality well known for producing vibrant green peridot. The photograph shows the exact piece you will receive, carefully selected for its colour, crystal character, and natural formation. Full sizing details are available in the listing photos to provide accurate scale and proportions.

Your specimen includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming it as a genuine Peridot mineral example.

Mineral Type & Scientific Classification

Peridot is the gem-quality variety of Olivine, a magnesium iron silicate with the chemical formula (Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄. It belongs to the nesosilicate mineral group and crystallises in the orthorhombic crystal system.

Olivine forms as an essential mineral in mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks. The green colour of peridot is intrinsic to its chemical composition and results from iron within the crystal structure. Unlike many coloured minerals, peridot’s green hue does not depend on trace elements but is a fundamental property of the mineral itself.

Peridot has a Mohs hardness of approximately 6.5 to 7, making it moderately durable. It typically displays a vitreous lustre and may show conchoidal to uneven fracture.

Colour, Crystal Habit & Natural Features

Rough Peridot from Pakistan is especially admired for its bright olive-green to deep lime-green tones. Some specimens may show slight yellowish or brownish undertones depending on iron content.

Crystals often occur as short prismatic forms or irregular masses embedded in host rock. Natural surface textures, minor inclusions, and fracture lines are common and reflect the mineral’s geological origin.

In thinner areas, peridot may display pleasing translucency when held to light. This specimen remains in its natural rough state without artificial enhancement or surface treatment.

Geological Formation – Pakistan

Pakistan is one of the most significant global sources of high-quality peridot, particularly from mountainous regions where peridot-bearing rocks are exposed.

Peridot forms in the Earth’s upper mantle and is brought closer to the surface through volcanic and tectonic processes. It is commonly found in ultramafic rocks such as peridotite and in some basaltic environments. In certain deposits, peridot crystals are weathered out of host rock and collected as individual specimens.

The geological conditions responsible for peridot formation involve high temperatures and pressures deep within the Earth, making it one of the few gemstones formed in mantle environments.

Associated minerals in such environments may include pyroxene, spinel, and other magnesium-rich silicates.

Collecting Appeal & Traditional Associations

Rough Peridot is highly valued by mineral collectors for its vibrant natural colour and mantle-derived origin. Specimens from Pakistan are particularly sought after due to their brightness and clarity.

The natural rough form highlights the mineral’s original crystal growth and geological context, making it ideal for display in mineral cabinets or educational collections.

In various traditions, peridot has been traditionally associated with renewal and vitality in symbolic spiritual contexts. These associations are spiritual in nature and reflect cultural interpretations of green minerals.
