Mineral Type & Scientific Classification
Rainbow Moonstone is a variety of Labradorite, belonging to the plagioclase feldspar group. Its chemical composition is primarily a sodium calcium aluminium silicate, typically expressed as:
(Na,Ca)(Al,Si)₄O₈
It crystallises in the triclinic crystal system and is known for its distinctive optical phenomenon called labradorescence. Although commonly marketed as moonstone, Rainbow Moonstone is technically a transparent to translucent variety of labradorite rather than orthoclase moonstone.
With a Mohs hardness of approximately 6–6.5, feldspar minerals are suitable for careful carving and polishing into decorative forms such as pendulums.
Optical Effect & Surface Features
One of the most striking characteristics of Rainbow Moonstone is its iridescent flash, which can display:
• Blue sheen
• Multicoloured spectral flashes
• Silvery or pearly glow
This optical effect is caused by light interference within microscopic layered structures inside the feldspar. As the stone is moved under light, different colours may appear across the surface.
The faceted pendulum shape enhances this effect by allowing multiple polished planes to catch and reflect light at varying angles, highlighting the internal structure.
Natural inclusions, internal veils, or subtle fractures may be visible, adding to the uniqueness of each specimen.
Geological Formation
Rainbow Moonstone forms in igneous environments, particularly within slowly cooled intrusive rocks such as granite and pegmatite. During crystallisation, alternating layers of feldspar minerals develop at a microscopic level. These internal lamellae create the interference patterns responsible for labradorescence.
Feldspar minerals are among the most abundant minerals in the Earth’s crust, but high-quality material displaying strong optical flash suitable for carving is less common.
Pendulum Form & Traditional Associations
The pendulum is shaped into a faceted point suspended from a chain, designed for balance and movement. The polished, symmetrical form allows for smooth motion and highlights the stone’s natural optical features.
Rainbow Moonstone pendulums are traditionally associated in spiritual symbolism with intuition and inner awareness. These interpretations are cultural and symbolic rather than scientific.
This Rainbow Moonstone Faceted Pendulum is suitable for:
