Description
Authentic Campo del Cielo Meteorite – Argentina – 4,000–6,000 Years Old
This specimen is a genuine Campo del Cielo meteorite fragment from Argentina, dating back around 4,000–6,000 years. It is a Nickel-Iron meteorite, prepared and fractured through a super-cooling process, and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. The exact specimen shown in the photographs will be the one you receive.
Campo del Cielo translates to “Field of the Sky” or “Field of Heaven”, a fitting name for this remarkable find. The original meteorite fall occurred approximately 6,000 years ago, around 500 miles northwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was first recorded in 1576 when Spanish explorers learned of its existence from Indigenous peoples who believed the irons had fallen from the heavens. An expedition led by Captain de Miraval recovered several large pieces, including one immense mass referred to as Meson de Fierro (“large table of iron”).
These meteorites are classified as coarse octahedrites, based on their distinctive Widmanstatten pattern – a crystalline structure unique to meteorites formed under the extreme cooling conditions of outer space. This makes each fragment an extraordinary example of extraterrestrial iron-nickel metal.
Your specimen has been treated for stability and requires minimal care, other than occasional brushing if signs of oxidation appear. It has also been lightly treated with gun oil to preserve its condition.
