Agate is a variety of silica, characterised by its fineness of grain and brightness of colour. Agate is one of the most common materials used in the art of hardstone carving and are used to make ornaments such as pins, brooches or other types of jewellery. Most agates occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or ancient lavas.
