Mineral Type & Scientific Classification
Moonstone belongs to the feldspar mineral group, most commonly composed of orthoclase and albite in intergrown layers. Feldspars are aluminium silicate minerals containing potassium or sodium and are classified as tectosilicates.
Orthoclase crystallises in the monoclinic crystal system, while albite belongs to the triclinic crystal system. Moonstone forms when these two feldspar varieties separate into microscopic alternating layers during slow cooling of molten rock.
Moonstone has a Mohs hardness of approximately 6–6.5, making it durable yet suitable for carving and polishing into smooth palm stones and worry stones.
Colour, Clarity & Adularescence
Moonstone is prized for its optical phenomenon known as adularescence. This effect appears as a soft, shifting glow or sheen that seems to float beneath the surface when the stone is moved under light. The phenomenon occurs due to light scattering between the microscopic feldspar layers within the stone.
This Moonstone palm stone may display:
• Milky white or cream base tones
• Subtle grey, peach, or translucent undertones
• Silvery or bluish sheen depending on light angle
• Translucent to semi-opaque clarity
The polished surface enhances the reflection of light, making the natural sheen more visible across the curved form.
Geological Formation
Moonstone typically forms in pegmatitic igneous rocks, where molten magma cools slowly, allowing large mineral crystals to develop. During cooling, the intergrowth of orthoclase and albite separates into thin lamellae, creating the layered internal structure responsible for adularescence.
Moonstone is often found alongside quartz, mica, tourmaline, and other feldspar minerals within pegmatite environments. These geological processes occur over extensive timescales, producing the unique internal structure seen in each specimen.
Worry Stone / Palm Stone Form
A worry stone or palm stone is shaped into a smooth, rounded form that fits comfortably in the hand. Some feature a slight thumb indentation, while others are uniformly curved. This carved shape enhances the stone’s natural colour and sheen while making it suitable for display or personal use.
Moonstone has been traditionally associated with intuition and new beginnings in spiritual symbolism. These interpretations are cultural and symbolic rather than scientific.
