Geological Formation – Born from a Miocene Meteorite Impact
Moldavite formed approximately 14.7 million years ago during the Middle Miocene, when a large meteorite struck what is now southern Germany, producing the famous Ries Crater. The immense energy from the impact melted vast quantities of silica-rich terrestrial rock, ejecting molten material high into the atmosphere. As these droplets cooled while airborne, they solidified into natural glass, creating the family of impact-produced materials known as tektites.
These molten droplets were carried eastward by the impact trajectory and fell across regions of modern-day Bohemia and Moravia in the Czech Republic. This area became the primary Moldavite strewn field. The striking green colour of Moldavite is the result of natural iron content and trace elements within the melted source rocks, forming one of the most visually distinctive tektites known to science.
