Description
Overview – Genuine Moldavite from the Czech Republic
This listing is for a 100% genuine Moldavite, a translucent green tektite formed by an ancient meteorite impact. Each specimen is hand-selected for quality, colour, and authenticity, and the photos show the exact piece you will receive. A Certificate of Authenticity is included with every order. Moldavite is highly prized among collectors, mineral enthusiasts, and spiritual users for its vivid colour, natural texture, and extraordinary cosmic origin. This specimen’s natural surface etching, distinctive green translucency, and aerodynamic sculpting showcase the classic features associated with high-quality Moldavite from the Czech Republic.
Geological Origin – A Meteorite Impact 14.7 Million Years Ago
Moldavite was created during the Middle Miocene, approximately 14.7 million years ago, when a massive meteorite struck what is now southern Germany, forming the Ries Crater. The explosive force melted terrestrial silica-rich rocks and ejected molten material high into the atmosphere. As these droplets cooled and solidified during flight, they formed aerodynamically shaped natural glass known as tektites. Carried eastward by the explosion’s trajectory, the molten droplets rained down over regions of modern-day Bohemia and Moravia in the Czech Republic, where most gem-quality Moldavite is found.
This geological event created one of the most famous strewn fields on Earth, producing tektites with a distinct green hue caused by natural iron and trace elements in the melted source rocks. The combination of extraterrestrial energy and terrestrial geology makes Moldavite one of the most scientifically significant natural glasses.
Morphology and Surface Features
Your specimen displays the characteristic etched, sculpted texture formed through differential chemical weathering in the sandy soils of Bohemia. The intricate surface patterning includes grooves, ripples, and natural pitting. These features form over millions of years as softer glass components dissolve more quickly, leaving behind beautifully detailed surface relief.
The translucent green colour varies in intensity depending on thickness, and when held to the light, the internal structure shows natural inclusions and flow patterns created during rapid cooling. Each Moldavite is unique; no two pieces ever share the same shape or etching, making every specimen a one-of-a-kind collectible.
Scientific and Collector Interest
Moldavite holds a special place in meteoritics and tektite research due to its confirmed association with the Ries impact event. It is considered the only tektite commonly used as a gemstone. Collectors value Moldavite for its colour, texture, and well-documented geological origin. The aerodynamic shaping seen in many pieces suggests high-velocity atmospheric travel, while the etched surfaces provide clues about long-term geological processes.
