Rather than producing the finest possible cutting margin, the maker created a robust edge capable of resisting repeated pressure. This type of edge could have been useful for scraping hides, cleaning wood, shaping organic materials or removing resistant tissue.
The distinction between a chopping tool and a heavy scraper is not always absolute. A single implement could potentially perform several tasks during its useful life, particularly where its size, edge angle and weight allowed both forceful chopping and controlled scraping.

These nodules often developed an outer cortex where the flint met the surrounding chalk. Cortex can appear rough, pale, chalky or weathered and may be retained on part of a prehistoric tool if it provided a useful gripping surface or did not interfere with the intended working edge.

Conchoidal Fracture and Toolmaking Quality
Flint was one of the most important raw materials used by prehistoric communities in Britain because it fractures predictably and can produce extremely sharp edges.
When struck correctly, flint breaks through conchoidal fracture, creating smooth, curved surfaces rather than splitting along regular crystal planes. This property enabled a skilled maker to control the direction, depth and approximate size of each flake removal.
For a large chopping tool or heavy scraper, the objective was not necessarily to create a thin, delicate implement. Instead, the maker could retain a substantial body while removing flakes along selected margins to establish a strong working edge.
