Mineral Composition & Classification
Lapis Lazuli is not a single mineral but a metamorphic rock composed primarily of lazurite, along with varying amounts of calcite, pyrite, and occasionally sodalite or other feldspathoid minerals.
Lazurite is a member of the feldspathoid mineral group, chemically classified as a sodium calcium aluminium silicate sulphate. It crystallises in the cubic (isometric) crystal system, although visible crystals are rare in massive lapis material.
The characteristic deep blue colour comes from sulphur radicals within the lazurite structure. The presence of metallic pyrite inclusions creates natural golden flecks, while white or pale grey areas are typically calcite.
Lapis Lazuli generally has a Mohs hardness of approximately 5–5.5, making it suitable for carving and polishing into decorative forms such as towers and points.
Colour, Texture & Surface Characteristics
This Lapis Lazuli tower displays:
• Deep royal to ultramarine blue tones
• Natural golden pyrite flecks
• Possible white calcite veining
• Smooth, polished faces with defined edges
The polished surfaces enhance colour contrast between lazurite, pyrite, and calcite, while the tower shape emphasises vertical lines and reflective planes. Each specimen is unique due to natural mineral distribution and patterning.
Geological Formation
Lapis Lazuli forms through contact metamorphism, typically when limestone or marble undergoes chemical and structural change due to heat and pressure in the presence of mineral-rich fluids. Under these conditions, lazurite and associated minerals crystallise within the host rock.
This metamorphic process occurs over extensive geological timescales, producing the distinctive blue rock valued for ornamental and decorative use for thousands of years. Historically significant deposits occur in regions where limestone has been transformed by igneous intrusion.
Tower Form & Traditional Associations
The tower or point shape is a crafted geometric form cut from natural Lapis Lazuli rough. It features a flat base so it can stand upright independently, with polished faces converging at a defined apex.
Lapis Lazuli has been traditionally associated with wisdom and insight in spiritual symbolism. These associations are cultural and symbolic rather than scientific.
This Lapis Lazuli Tower is suitable for:
• Mineral and rock collections
• Metamorphic rock enthusiasts
• Decorative home or office display
• Meditation or spiritual spaces
• Unique natural gifts
