Mineral Composition & Geological Classification
Lapis Lazuli is not a single mineral but a metamorphic rock composed primarily of the mineral lazurite, along with varying amounts of calcite, pyrite, and occasionally sodalite or other feldspathoid minerals.
Lazurite is a member of the feldspathoid group, chemically classified as a sodium calcium aluminium silicate with sulphur. It crystallises in the cubic (isometric) crystal system, though individual crystals are rarely visible within massive lapis material.
The deep blue colour of Lapis Lazuli is due to sulphur radicals within the lazurite structure. The presence of golden pyrite inclusions often creates attractive metallic flecks throughout the stone, while calcite may appear as white veining or mottling.
Lapis Lazuli typically has a Mohs hardness of approximately 5–5.5, making it suitable for carving and polishing while retaining detail and surface finish.
Colour, Texture & Surface Characteristics
This Lapis Lazuli palm stone displays:
• Rich royal to deep ultramarine blue tones
• Natural golden pyrite flecks
• Possible white calcite veining
• Smooth, polished finish
The combination of blue lazurite, metallic pyrite, and pale calcite creates distinctive natural patterning. Each piece varies in mineral distribution, making every specimen unique.
The polished surface enhances colour contrast and gives the stone a refined, tactile quality suitable for holding or display.
Geological Formation
Lapis Lazuli forms through contact metamorphism, typically when limestone is subjected to high temperatures and pressure in the presence of mineral-rich fluids. These conditions allow lazurite and associated minerals to crystallise within the host rock.
Major deposits are historically associated with metamorphic regions where marble and limestone have undergone chemical transformation. Over geological time, the interplay of pressure, temperature, and fluid composition produces the characteristic blue rock known as Lapis Lazuli.
Worry Stone / Palm Stone Form & Traditional Associations
A worry stone or palm stone is carved into a smooth, rounded shape designed to sit comfortably in the hand. Some may feature a shallow thumb indentation, while others are uniformly curved.
Lapis Lazuli has been traditionally associated with wisdom and truth in symbolic and spiritual traditions. These associations are cultural rather than scientific.
This palm stone is suitable for:
• Mineral and rock collections
• Decorative display
• Metamorphic rock study
• Meditation or spiritual settings
• Unique natural gifts
