Description
Labradorite Tower – Natural Feldspar Crystal Point
This Labradorite Tower is a genuine natural feldspar specimen shaped and polished into a standing point form. Carefully selected for its colour play and surface quality, this piece highlights the striking optical effect that makes Labradorite a highly recognisable mineral. The photograph shows the exact specimen you will receive. Please refer to the listing images for full sizing and proportions.
This crystal is a genuine specimen and includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card.
Mineral Type & Scientific Classification
Labradorite is a member of the plagioclase feldspar group, chemically classified as a calcium sodium aluminium silicate with the formula (Ca,Na)(Al,Si)₄O₈. It belongs to the tectosilicate mineral class and crystallises in the triclinic crystal system.
Feldspars are among the most abundant minerals in the Earth’s crust. Labradorite forms in igneous rocks such as basalt and gabbro, as well as in some metamorphic environments. It has a Mohs hardness of approximately 6–6.5, making it suitable for carving and polishing into decorative forms such as towers and points.
Colour, Labradorescence & Surface Features
This Labradorite tower displays:
• Grey to dark base tones
• Iridescent flashes of blue, green, gold, or multicolour
• Opaque to slightly translucent edges
• Smooth, polished faces
The distinctive optical effect known as labradorescence is caused by light interference within microscopic lamellar structures formed during crystal cooling. As light enters the stone, it reflects between these internal layers, producing vibrant flashes that shift with movement and viewing angle.
Each Labradorite specimen displays a unique pattern and intensity of colour play, depending on internal structure and orientation.
Geological Formation
Labradorite forms during the slow cooling of magma in igneous rock environments. As molten material cools, feldspar minerals crystallise. During this process, chemical separation within the crystal creates thin internal layers of differing composition. These layers are responsible for the optical interference that produces labradorescence.
Labradorite is commonly associated with minerals such as pyroxene, amphibole, and other plagioclase feldspars in mafic intrusive rocks like gabbro and basalt. Over geological timescales, tectonic activity may expose these formations at the Earth’s surface, where they can be quarried and shaped.
Tower Form & Traditional Associations
The tower or point shape is a crafted geometric form cut from natural Labradorite rough. It features a flat base for stable upright display and polished faces that converge toward a defined apex. The shape enhances the reflection of light, often intensifying visible flashes when rotated.
Labradorite has been traditionally associated with transformation and intuition in spiritual symbolism. These interpretations are cultural and symbolic rather than scientific.
This Labradorite Tower is suitable for:
