About Labradorite
Labradorite is a stunning feldspar mineral celebrated for its unique optical effect known as labradorescence – a brilliant iridescent play of colours ranging from deep blues and greens to flashes of gold, orange, and even violet. This shimmering quality is caused by light refracting within microscopic layers of the crystal, creating the stone’s famous rainbow-like sheen.
It is an intermediate to calcic member of the plagioclase feldspar series and forms in the triclinic crystal system. Labradorite typically occurs in mafic igneous rocks such as basalt and gabbro, as well as in anorthosite, a rare igneous rock composed largely of plagioclase feldspar. The mineral’s streak is white, consistent with most silicate minerals. Labradorite deposits are found worldwide, but high-quality specimens are especially associated with India, Madagascar, Canada, and Finland.
Geological Significance
Labradorite is not only admired for its beauty but also valued in geology as a diagnostic feldspar mineral. Its iridescence makes it easy to distinguish from other feldspars, and its presence provides important insights into the cooling and crystallisation history of igneous rocks. The finest gem-quality labradorite, often referred to as spectrolite, can display a full spectrum of colours.
Metaphysical Properties
In crystal healing traditions, labradorite is considered a stone of transformation and protection, believed to enhance intuition, psychic abilities, and self-discovery. Its reflective nature is thought to shield the aura, deflect negativity, and encourage inner strength and perseverance. Many associate the 12-point healing star carving with focused energy direction, amplifying the metaphysical qualities of the stone.
