Geological & Scientific Information
Tektites are natural glass objects formed from the immense heat and pressure of meteorite impacts on Earth’s surface. They are typically black or dark brown, with a distinctive glossy texture and aerodynamic shapes formed as molten rock cooled during atmospheric re-entry. Chemically, tektites are very similar to terrestrial rocks, but their formation process under cosmic impact conditions distinguishes them from volcanic glasses like obsidian.
Indochinite tektites are part of the Australasian Strewn Field, the largest and youngest known strewn field, created approximately 780,000 years ago. This vast event scattered tektites over parts of Southeast Asia, Australia, and nearby regions. Indochinites are usually jet black, opaque, and display natural sculpting caused by ablative heating during their fiery journey through Earth’s atmosphere.
The origins of tektites have long been debated. The dominant theory is that they formed when molten terrestrial rock was ejected by a massive meteorite impact, later cooling and solidifying as glass. Some alternative theories, including those of former NASA astronomer Dr. John A. O’Keefe, suggest tektites may have lunar origins or once orbited Earth as a ring before falling to the surface.
Collectors & Metaphysical Information
Indochinite tektites are highly prized by both scientists and collectors. Their extraterrestrial connection, unique natural shapes, and glossy appearance make them essential additions to any meteorite or mineral collection.
In metaphysical practices, tektites are believed to:
- Enhance spiritual growth and cosmic connection.
- Aid astral travel and higher consciousness.
- Provide grounding and protective energies.
- Expand awareness of the universe and one’s place within it.
