These Meteorites have been found by a Berber Nomad in North Africa, and are in their original ‘as found’ condition.

H5 type meteorites are part of the H chondrite group, a subtype of ordinary chondrites, renowned for their high iron content, which gives them a distinct metallic nature. These meteorites originated from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and they are fragments of an ancient celestial body that underwent partial melting and thermal metamorphism. The “H” in their classification denotes “high iron,” while the number “5” indicates their thermal metamorphic grade, showing that they have undergone a moderate level of heat processing on their parent body, leading to well-crystallized olivine and pyroxene minerals.

The NWA (Northwest Africa) designation reflects that these specimens were found in the Sahara Desert, where their preservation is typically remarkable due to the arid climate. H5 chondrites are particularly fascinating for collectors and researchers, as they reveal much about the early Solar System’s formation and evolution. These meteorites feature a dark matrix speckled with metal flakes, chondrules, and silicate grains, creating a visually striking contrast that showcases their extraterrestrial origin. Each H5 chondrite meteorite is a timeless piece of cosmic history, perfect for anyone interested in holding a fragment of our Solar System’s ancient building blocks.

Ultimately, the testing laboratory (The Natural History Museum in the UK) will assign a name and publish a description. The name generally refers to the region or nearest town to the location of the fall or find.

The majority of stone meteorites fall into the category of ‘Common Chondrite’. These are ancient stony objects that formed within the solar disc about 4.5 billion years ago and which are by far the most frequently discovered ‘space rocks’. Many of these are found in large ‘strewnfields’ in the North Western Sahara. While waiting for a full examination/description, these are referred to as unclassified NWA Meteorites (North West Africa Meteorites).

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Description

Genuine NWA H5 Meteorite from the Sahara Desert

This listing features a genuine H5 chondrite meteorite, discovered by a Berber nomad in the Northwest African Sahara Desert. Presented in its original “as found” condition, this specimen has been carefully hand-selected and photographed to show its natural features. The photograph displays the exact specimen you will receive, with a 1cm scale cube included for accurate sizing. Each meteorite comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, ensuring it is a 100% genuine specimen of extraterrestrial origin.

Classification and Origin

H5 meteorites belong to the H chondrite group, a major subtype of ordinary chondrites that account for the majority of stone meteorites found on Earth. The “H” classification stands for “high iron,” a characteristic that gives these meteorites their distinctive metallic appearance and speckled matrix. The “5” refers to their metamorphic grade, meaning they have undergone a moderate level of thermal processing on their parent body. This recrystallisation has produced well-formed olivine and pyroxene minerals, giving the meteorite its crystalline texture.

These meteorites are fragments of a larger celestial body that once orbited in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Over billions of years, collisions broke these parent bodies apart, sending fragments on trajectories that eventually intersected with Earth’s orbit. After surviving the fiery passage through the atmosphere, these fragments landed in the arid desert sands of North Africa, where the dry climate has preserved them exceptionally well.

Geological and Scientific Importance

H5 chondrites are invaluable to science because they preserve ancient material from the early solar system, dating back around 4.5 billion years. Their mineralogy includes chondrules – rounded silicate grains formed in the solar nebula – as well as metallic nickel-iron and crystalline silicates. The presence of these components provides crucial insights into the formation and evolution of the early solar system.

NWA meteorites are initially referred to as “unclassified” until formal classification is completed by a testing institution, such as the Natural History Museum in the UK. Once fully examined, they are given official names, usually based on the nearest town or region where they were found.

Physical Features and Display Value

This meteorite displays the dark matrix typical of H-group chondrites, often speckled with metal flakes and visible chondrules. Some specimens may still retain traces of fusion crust, the thin, darkened layer formed during atmospheric entry. Its natural and irregular form adds to its authenticity and appeal, making it an excellent specimen for collectors, educators, or enthusiasts seeking a tangible piece of space history.

Each meteorite is completely unique, ensuring that no two pieces are identical. Its extraterrestrial composition and striking appearance make it a fascinating addition to any display.

Collecting Value

H5 chondrite meteorites from Northwest Africa are highly collectible due to their combination of scientific importance, excellent preservation, and accessibility. They allow collectors to own a fragment of cosmic history while also contributing to the broader understanding of planetary science. Their metallic flecks, silicate grains, and chondrules make them visually captivating specimens.

For anyone interested in astronomy, geology, or the history of the solar system, an NWA H5 meteorite is a timeless collectible and a remarkable conversation piece.

Authenticity Guarantee

All of our meteorites are 100% genuine specimens. This NWA H5 Chondrite meteorite is supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity verifying its extraterrestrial origin. The exact specimen shown in the photographs is the one you will receive, ensuring complete transparency and confidence in your purchase.
