Agate is a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of Quartz composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). At the microscopic level, chalcedony consists of extremely fine intergrowths of quartz and moganite, arranged in fibrous layers. Quartz belongs to the trigonal crystal system, though agate typically forms in massive, layered structures rather than visible individual crystals.

The defining feature of agate is its banded appearance. These bands form through rhythmic deposition of silica from mineral-rich solutions, creating concentric or fortification-style patterns.
