Description

Agate Slice 3–4 Inch – Natural Banded Chalcedony Quartz Mineral

This Agate Slice (approximately 3–4 inches) is a genuine natural mineral specimen, cut and polished to reveal the intricate internal banding that makes agate one of the most recognisable varieties of chalcedony. The photograph shows the exact slice you will receive, carefully selected for its colour contrast, pattern clarity, and finish. Full sizing details are available in the listing photos. Your specimen includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming it as an authentic natural stone.

Mineral Type & Crystal Structure

Agate is a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of Quartz composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). At the microscopic level, chalcedony consists of extremely fine intergrowths of quartz and moganite, arranged in fibrous layers. Quartz belongs to the trigonal crystal system, though agate typically forms in massive, layered structures rather than visible individual crystals.

The defining feature of agate is its banded appearance. These bands form through rhythmic deposition of silica from mineral-rich solutions, creating concentric or fortification-style patterns. Colours vary widely depending on trace elements and inclusions and may include white, grey, brown, red, orange, blue, or cream tones.

Agate measures approximately 6.5–7 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it durable and suitable for cutting and polishing. When polished, it displays a smooth, vitreous lustre that enhances its natural patterns.

Geological Formation

Agate typically forms within cavities of volcanic rocks such as basalt. When silica-rich groundwater enters these cavities, it deposits successive layers of chalcedony over time. Variations in mineral content, temperature, and chemical conditions during deposition create the distinctive layered structures.

As the cavity fills inward from the outer walls, concentric bands develop. In some cases, the centre of the cavity may contain crystalline quartz or remain partially hollow. Associated minerals may include amethyst, calcite, jasper, and other silica varieties.

Significant agate deposits are found in Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, Mexico, and parts of the United States, among other volcanic regions worldwide.

Appearance & Finish

This 3–4 inch agate slice has been cut from a larger nodule and polished on its flat surfaces to reveal its internal banding. The outer edge often retains a more natural texture, preserving the original shape of the nodule.

Depending on the specimen, the slice may be translucent when held to light, allowing the bands to softly glow. Natural inclusions, subtle colour transitions, and variations in band thickness are part of its geological development and make each piece unique.

Some agate slices on the market are dyed to enhance colour contrast; where applicable, this is a common decorative practice. The structure and banding pattern remain natural to the stone.

Traditional & Decorative Use

Agate has been used for thousands of years in ornamental carvings, jewellery, and decorative objects. It has been traditionally associated in symbolic practices with balance and stability. These associations are cultural and spiritual rather than scientific.

Today, agate slices are popular as display pieces, paperweights, photography props, and additions to mineral collections due to their striking natural patterns.

Ideal for Collectors & Gifting

This Agate Slice (3–4 inches) makes a beautiful addition to any mineral collection or home décor arrangement. Its natural banding and polished finish create a visually engaging focal point whether displayed on a stand, shelf, or desk.

You will receive the exact specimen shown in the photographs, securely packaged and presented with a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee card. A genuine agate chalcedony mineral slice, selected for quality, structure, and visual appeal.
