Mineral Species & Crystal Structure

Red garnet from Skardu is typically a member of the Almandine (Fe₃Al₂(SiO₄)₃) or Almandine-rich garnet series within the Garnet Group. Garnets are nesosilicate minerals that crystallise in the isometric (cubic) crystal system, most commonly forming dodecahedral or trapezohedral crystal habits.

Garnet has a Mohs hardness of approximately 6.5–7.5, making it a durable mineral suitable for both collecting and lapidary interest. Its vitreous to slightly resinous lustre enhances its visual appeal, particularly when crystal faces are well defined.

“Finger” garnet refers to an elongated crystal growth formation, often showing extended development along one axis while maintaining its characteristic garnet crystal geometry. This type of formation is especially prized by collectors due to its uncommon and visually striking shape.

Colour, Clarity & Natural Features

Skardu garnets are well known for their deep red to wine-red coloration, sometimes displaying subtle brownish or purplish undertones depending on iron content and lighting conditions. The rich red colour in almandine garnet is primarily due to iron within the crystal structure.

This Grade A specimen has been selected for strong colour saturation and well-preserved crystal form. Natural inclusions, growth zoning, and internal reflective planes may be visible, especially under magnification. These inclusions are typical of garnet formed in metamorphic environments and contribute to the specimen’s individuality.

Surface textures may show natural crystal faces with minor contact points where the garnet grew against surrounding host rock. No artificial colour enhancement or treatment has been applied.

Geological Origin – Skardu, Northern Pakistan

Skardu, located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, is internationally recognised for producing high-quality garnet, aquamarine, tourmaline, and other pegmatite and metamorphic minerals. The region’s complex geological history, shaped by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, created intense metamorphic conditions ideal for garnet formation.

Red garnets from Skardu are typically found within metamorphic schists and gneisses, formed under high temperature and pressure conditions deep within the Earth’s crust. These geological processes allow garnet crystals to grow slowly and develop well-formed cubic symmetry.

The mountainous terrain of northern Pakistan is considered one of the world’s most important mineral-producing regions, with specimens highly valued in international mineral markets.

Collecting, Display & Gifting

A Grade A Finger Red Garnet from Skardu makes a striking addition to any mineral collection. Its deep red colour and elongated crystal habit create a visually impressive display specimen suitable for cabinet collections, geology enthusiasts, and natural history displays.

In various cultural traditions, garnet is spiritually associated with strength and grounding; however, it is primarily valued as a naturally formed metamorphic mineral specimen and a classic representative of the garnet group.

The distinctive finger formation and rich natural colour make this piece ideal for collectors seeking high-quality Pakistani minerals or for those looking for a unique geological gift.
