Mineral Species & Crystal Structure

Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral with the chemical formula CaF₂. It crystallises in the isometric (cubic) crystal system and most commonly forms cubic crystals, though octahedral and modified cubic forms are also possible. Fluorite has a Mohs hardness of 4 and is known for its vitreous lustre and wide range of colours.

The pink and green colouration in fluorite is typically caused by trace elements and structural defects within the crystal lattice. Zoned crystals showing both pink and green hues are especially desirable, as they demonstrate changes in growth conditions during formation.

Black Tourmaline, commonly the species Schorl, is a sodium iron aluminium borosilicate mineral belonging to the tourmaline group. It crystallises in the trigonal crystal system and typically forms elongated, vertically striated prismatic crystals. Schorl has a Mohs hardness of 7–7.5 and a vitreous to slightly resinous lustre.

The combination of cubic fluorite and prismatic black tourmaline creates a visually striking contrast of crystal habits and colour.

Colour, Clarity & Natural Characteristics

This specimen displays attractive pink and green fluorite crystal faces, often with natural colour zoning visible across cube edges or within internal growth layers. Fluorite from Skardu can range from translucent to transparent, with internal clarity varying according to formation conditions.

The black tourmaline crystals provide a bold contrast, often appearing as sharply defined prismatic formations either embedded within or associated alongside the fluorite matrix. Natural growth striations along the length of the tourmaline crystals are typical and reflect uninterrupted crystal development.

Minor inclusions, contact points, and growth features are natural characteristics formed during crystallisation. No artificial colour enhancement or treatment has been applied to this specimen.

Geological Origin – Skardu, Northern Pakistan

Skardu, located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, is internationally recognised for producing high-quality fluorite, tourmaline, aquamarine, and other pegmatite minerals. The region’s complex tectonic setting, shaped by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, has created ideal conditions for pegmatite and hydrothermal mineral formation.

Fluorite in this region commonly forms in hydrothermal veins and pegmatitic environments, where mineral-rich fluids deposit crystals in cavities over extended geological periods. Black tourmaline (schorl) forms in granitic pegmatites and metamorphic environments rich in boron and iron.

The association of fluorite and tourmaline reflects dynamic mineralising conditions and makes specimens from this locality highly regarded among collectors.

Collecting, Display & Gifting

A Grade A Pink and Green Fluorite with Black Tourmaline from Skardu is a standout addition to any mineral collection. The contrasting cubic fluorite and elongated tourmaline crystals create visual depth and natural symmetry, ideal for cabinet display or educational collections.

In various traditions, fluorite and tourmaline are spiritually associated with balance and grounding; however, they are primarily valued as naturally formed mineral specimens representing pegmatite and hydrothermal geological processes.

This carefully chosen piece is ideal for mineral collectors, geology enthusiasts, or as a distinctive natural gift showcasing the mineral richness of northern Pakistan.
