Mineral Information & Crystal Classification
Peridot is the gem-quality variety of the mineral olivine, with the chemical formula (Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄. It belongs to the nesosilicate group and crystallises in the orthorhombic crystal system. Unlike many gemstones that form in a wide range of colours, peridot is distinctly known for its characteristic green tones, which result from iron within its crystal structure.
The Sipat Valley deposits are particularly noted for producing peridot with strong, vibrant green colouration and excellent transparency. Depending on iron content, peridot may range from yellow-green through olive to deep grassy green. Grade A examples from this locality are prized for their bright saturation and natural lustre.
Peridot typically forms in prismatic or tabular crystal habits and often displays well-defined crystal faces with vitreous lustre. Natural inclusions may be present, which are common in olivine and can include small mineral inclusions or characteristic internal features formed during crystal growth.
Geological Origin – Sipat Valley, Mansehra
The Sipat Valley region in northern Pakistan lies within a geologically significant mountainous zone influenced by tectonic activity related to the Himalayan orogeny. Peridot from this area is commonly associated with ultramafic rocks, particularly peridotite, from which the gemstone takes its name.
These crystals form deep within the Earth’s mantle and are brought closer to the surface through tectonic uplift and geological processes over millions of years. Pakistani peridot gained international recognition in the late 20th century for rivaling historic sources in clarity and colour.
Specimens from Sipat Valley are especially valued in the mineral and gemstone collecting community due to their sharp crystal definition and vivid natural hues.
