Mineral Species & Crystal Structure

Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral with the chemical formula CaF₂. It crystallises in the isometric (cubic) crystal system and is most commonly found forming cubic crystals, though modified cubes and octahedral forms can also occur. The mineral has a Mohs hardness of 4 and exhibits a vitreous lustre.

The cubic structure of fluorite is one of its defining features, often resulting in sharp, geometric crystal faces and clean edges. In high-quality specimens, these cubes may show stepped growth patterns, hopper formations, or subtle surface zoning reflecting variations during crystal growth.

Pink fluorite is a rarer colour variety, and its hue can range from soft blush pink to deeper rose tones depending on trace elements and structural conditions during formation.

Colour, Clarity & Natural Characteristics

This Grade A specimen displays attractive pink tones, which may appear more vibrant under direct lighting. The colour is natural and formed during the mineral’s crystallisation process within its geological environment.

Fluorite from Skardu often shows varying levels of transparency, from translucent to semi-transparent. Internal growth zoning, faint inclusions, or minor contact points are natural features and reflect the crystal’s development in a mineral-rich cavity.

Natural cleavage planes may also be present, as fluorite has perfect octahedral cleavage. These structural characteristics are inherent to the mineral and contribute to its distinctive crystalline appearance.

This specimen has not been dyed or artificially enhanced and remains in its natural state.

Geological Origin – Skardu, Northern Pakistan

Skardu, located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, is internationally recognised for producing high-quality fluorite and other pegmatite minerals. The region’s complex geology is influenced by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, resulting in extensive metamorphic and hydrothermal activity.

Pink fluorite from this locality typically forms in hydrothermal veins and cavities within host rock. Mineral-rich fluids circulating through fractures deposit calcium fluoride over extended geological periods, allowing cubic crystals to develop under stable conditions.

Specimens from Skardu are highly regarded within the mineral collecting community due to their colour saturation, crystal clarity, and well-formed cubic geometry.

Collecting, Display & Gifting

A Grade A Pink Fluorite crystal from Skardu makes a striking addition to mineral cabinets, geology collections, or decorative natural displays. The soft pink hue combined with geometric crystal structure offers both visual appeal and geological interest.

In some traditions, fluorite is traditionally associated with clarity and organisation; however, it is primarily valued as a naturally formed mineral specimen and an example of hydrothermal crystal growth.

Its colour rarity and locality significance make it particularly desirable for collectors seeking high-quality Pakistani mineral specimens or for those looking for a distinctive natural gift.
