Mineral Species & Crystal Structure

Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral with the chemical formula CaF₂. It crystallises in the isometric (cubic) crystal system and most commonly forms well-defined cubic crystals with sharp edges and flat faces. Modified cubes, stepped growth formations, and occasional octahedral influences may also occur depending on crystallisation conditions.

With a Mohs hardness of 4, fluorite is softer than many silicate minerals but highly valued for its clarity, geometry, and colour diversity. The mineral exhibits a vitreous lustre, producing a glass-like surface reflection when light interacts with its crystal faces.

Green fluorite develops its colour through trace elements and structural variations within the crystal lattice. Variations in trace chemistry during growth can result in subtle zoning or layered colour intensity within individual crystals.

Colour, Transparency & Natural Features

This Grade A specimen displays attractive green tones, ranging from soft mint to richer emerald hues depending on lighting conditions. Under direct light, the colour may appear deeper, revealing internal growth patterns and natural zoning.

Fluorite from Skardu often ranges from translucent to semi-transparent. Natural inclusions, internal veils, minor contact points, or surface growth lines are common and reflect the crystal’s geological formation. Fluorite also has perfect octahedral cleavage, and natural cleavage planes may be visible as part of its inherent crystal structure.

These characteristics are natural features of genuine fluorite and contribute to the uniqueness of each specimen. No artificial dyes, enhancements, or treatments have been applied.

Geological Origin – Skardu, Northern Pakistan

Skardu, located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of northern Pakistan, is internationally recognised for producing high-quality fluorite and other hydrothermal and pegmatite minerals. The region’s geology has been shaped by the tectonic interaction between the Indian and Eurasian plates, creating favourable conditions for mineral-rich fluid circulation.

Green fluorite in this area typically forms in hydrothermal veins and cavities within host rock. Over extended geological periods, calcium- and fluorine-rich fluids deposit crystals in open spaces, allowing cubic fluorite to develop under stable environmental conditions.

Specimens from Skardu are highly regarded within the mineral collecting community due to their colour intensity, clarity, and well-formed cubic structures.

Collecting, Display & Gifting

A Grade A Green Fluorite crystal from Skardu is an excellent addition to mineral cabinets, geology collections, or natural interior displays. The clean cubic geometry combined with vibrant green tones makes it visually striking from multiple viewing angles.

In some traditions, fluorite is traditionally associated with clarity and organisation; however, it is primarily valued as a naturally formed mineral specimen and an example of hydrothermal crystal growth.

This carefully chosen specimen makes a distinctive gift for mineral collectors, geology enthusiasts, or those who appreciate natural crystal formations from renowned international localities.
