Mineral Species & Crystal Structure

Epidote is a calcium aluminium iron sorosilicate mineral with the general chemical formula Ca₂(Al,Fe)₃(SiO₄)₃(OH). It crystallises in the monoclinic crystal system and commonly forms elongated prismatic crystals, often displaying striations along the length of the crystal faces.

The green colour of epidote is largely influenced by the presence of iron within its structure. Variations in iron content can result in shades ranging from pistachio green to deep olive or forest green. Epidote has a Mohs hardness of approximately 6–7 and exhibits a vitreous to slightly resinous lustre.

Well-formed epidote crystals from Balochistan are especially valued for their sharp terminations, strong vertical growth patterns, and saturated colouration.

Colour, Clarity & Natural Characteristics

This Grade A specimen displays the classic green tone associated with high-quality epidote. The colour may appear richer under direct lighting, where the crystal faces reflect light across their naturally striated surfaces.

Epidote crystals are typically translucent to semi-translucent. Internal inclusions, growth zoning, and minor contact points are natural features formed during crystallisation and are part of the mineral’s geological history. These characteristics enhance the individuality of each specimen.

The crystal has not been dyed, treated, or artificially enhanced. It remains in its natural state as formed within its host rock environment.

Geological Origin – Balochistan Province

Balochistan is internationally recognised for producing a wide range of high-quality mineral specimens. The region’s complex tectonic history and metamorphic environments provide ideal conditions for epidote formation.

Epidote typically forms in regional metamorphic rocks and hydrothermal environments, particularly where calcium-rich rocks such as limestone or basalt undergo alteration under elevated temperature and pressure. In such environments, epidote can crystallise within veins and cavities, allowing well-formed prismatic crystals to develop.

Mineral specimens from Balochistan are highly regarded within the global collector community due to their quality, colour saturation, and crystal definition.

Collecting, Display & Gifting

Green epidote makes an excellent addition to mineral collections, cabinet displays, educational geology collections, or natural décor arrangements. Its elongated crystal habit and deep green colour create a visually striking display from multiple viewing angles.

In some spiritual traditions, epidote is traditionally associated with growth and renewal; however, it is primarily valued as a naturally formed silicate mineral and a representative example of metamorphic geological processes.

This carefully chosen Grade A specimen is ideal for collectors seeking authentic Pakistani minerals or for those looking for a distinctive natural crystal gift.
