Mineral Species & Crystal Structure

Calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral with the chemical formula CaCO₃. It crystallises in the trigonal crystal system and commonly forms rhombohedral, scalenohedral, prismatic, or blocky crystal habits. Specimens from the Lorali region are particularly noted for their sharply defined faces and well-developed terminations.

Calcite has a Mohs hardness of 3 and exhibits perfect rhombohedral cleavage in three directions. It is known for its vitreous to pearly lustre and can range from transparent to translucent depending on formation conditions. Many Pakistani calcites are prized for their optical clarity and internal reflective planes that create striking light play when displayed.

Colour, Clarity & Natural Features

Lorali Mine calcite typically displays clear, white, honey, champagne, or faint golden tones, sometimes influenced by trace mineral inclusions during crystal growth. Grade A pieces are selected for their superior transparency, minimal surface damage, and well-preserved edges.

Natural growth lines, internal veils, and subtle inclusions may be visible under magnification, reflecting the geological environment in which the crystal formed. These features are part of the crystal’s natural development and add to its authenticity and uniqueness as a collector’s mineral.

No artificial treatments or enhancements have been applied to this specimen.

Geological Origin – Lorali Mines, Balochistan

The Lorali Mines in Balochistan Province are internationally recognised among mineral collectors for producing high-quality calcite and associated minerals. The region’s complex geological history, including hydrothermal activity and sedimentary host rock formations, provides ideal conditions for well-formed calcite crystal growth.

Calcite from this locality is often found in association with other carbonate and sulphide minerals, depending on the specific vein system. The crystals typically form within cavities and fractures where mineral-rich fluids have allowed uninterrupted growth over extended geological periods.

Pakistani calcite specimens have become highly sought after in the global mineral market due to their aesthetic structure and consistent quality.

Display, Collecting & Gifting

This specimen is ideal for mineral collectors, geology enthusiasts, educational displays, cabinet collections, or as a distinctive natural décor piece. Calcite remains one of the most important rock-forming minerals on Earth and is widely studied in geology due to its role in limestone and marble formation.

Traditionally, calcite is spiritually associated with clarity and focus in crystal collecting communities; however, it is primarily valued as a natural geological specimen and collector’s mineral.
