Description

Grade A Afghanite – UV Reactive Mineral Specimen from Afghanistan

This Grade A Afghanite crystal is a genuine natural mineral specimen sourced from Afghanistan, a country internationally recognised for producing some of the finest and most vibrant examples of this rare tectosilicate mineral. The photograph shows the exact specimen you will receive, carefully selected for its colour, structure and fluorescence. Full sizing details are available in the listing photos for accurate scale reference.

This crystal includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming it as a genuine natural specimen.

Mineral Classification & Crystal Structure

Afghanite is a rare member of the cancrinite–sodalite group of tectosilicate minerals. Its complex chemical formula is generally written as (Na,K)₂₂Ca₁₀(Si₂₄Al₂₄O₉₆)(SO₄)₆Cl₆, reflecting its sodium, potassium, calcium, sulphate and chloride content within an intricate aluminosilicate framework.

It crystallises in the hexagonal crystal system, often forming prismatic to massive habits. Afghanite is typically found in rich shades of deep blue to blue-violet, sometimes displaying lighter zoning or subtle variations depending on composition and associated minerals. The colour is one of its most striking features and makes it highly desirable among mineral collectors.

Transparency ranges from translucent to opaque, and surfaces may show a vitreous to slightly greasy lustre. In some specimens, Afghanite occurs intergrown with other minerals, contributing to complex and visually interesting matrix pieces.

UV Reactivity & Optical Properties

One of the most distinctive features of Afghanite is its ultraviolet fluorescence. Under UV light, many specimens display a vivid reaction, often glowing in bright orange to reddish tones depending on wavelength and mineral chemistry. This fluorescent response makes Afghanite particularly appealing to collectors of UV reactive minerals and those who display specimens under specialised lighting.

Its fluorescence is a natural property of the mineral and not the result of artificial enhancement.

Geological Origin – Afghanistan

Afghanite was first described from Afghanistan and remains strongly associated with deposits in the Sar-e-Sang region and other metamorphic terrains. It commonly forms in contact metamorphic environments, particularly in calc-silicate rocks and marbles subjected to high-grade metamorphism.

It is often found in association with minerals such as lazurite, sodalite, calcite, diopside, and other feldspathoid group minerals. These geological conditions contribute to the mineral’s complex chemistry and vibrant colouration.

Afghanistan’s mountainous geology, shaped by intense tectonic processes related to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, provides ideal conditions for the formation of rare and visually striking mineral species such as Afghanite.

Specimen Quality & Collector Appeal

This Grade A specimen has been carefully chosen for:

  • Strong natural blue colour

  • Notable UV reactivity

  • Attractive natural formation

  • Display quality presence

Afghanite is considerably rarer than many common blue minerals, making it a sought-after addition to serious mineral collections. It is suitable for collectors, geology enthusiasts, educational collections, fluorescent mineral displays, or as a distinctive natural décor piece.

No artificial treatments or colour enhancements have been applied to this specimen.

Traditional & Spiritual Associations

In spiritual traditions, blue minerals such as Afghanite have been traditionally associated with clarity and higher awareness practices. These associations are cultural and symbolic in nature and are not presented as scientific claims.

Authenticity & Assurance

  • 100% genuine natural Afghanite

  • Sourced from Afghanistan

  • UV reactive mineral specimen

  • Includes Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card

  • The exact specimen shown is the one you will receive

This Grade A Afghanite crystal represents a rare and visually impressive mineral species with notable fluorescence and geological significance, making it a standout addition to any mineral or UV reactive collection.
