Geological & Scientific Information
Opal is a hydrated silica mineral (SiO2·nH2O) with an amorphous crystal structure. Unlike crystalline quartz, opal does not form ordered lattices but instead has a unique internal structure made up of microscopic silica spheres. The way these spheres diffract light is what gives opal its play-of-colour, displaying shifting flashes of red, blue, green, yellow, and violet.
Ethiopian opals, discovered in the Wollo Province in 1994 and later in Shewa Province in 2008, have become some of the most prized opals on the market. Unlike Australian opals, which are sedimentary, Ethiopian opals are often hydrophane opals, meaning they are porous and can absorb water, temporarily changing in transparency and colour vibrancy. This unique quality distinguishes Ethiopian opals from other global sources.
Opal is commonly found with host rocks such as limonite, sandstone, rhyolite, marl, and basalt, depending on the locality. While Australia supplies around 96% of the world’s opals, Ethiopian opals are increasingly sought after due to their brilliant play-of-colour, affordability, and availability in larger crystal sizes.
