Cut and Polished Burton Bradstock Fossil Ammonite – Middle Bajocian, Jurassic – Dorset Coast, United Kingdom

This stunning, cut and polished fossil ammonite was collected from the iconic Burton Bradstock cliffs along the Dorset Coast, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coastline. Dating back to the Middle Bajocian stage of the Jurassic Period, this authentic specimen has been carefully prepared to reveal the beautiful internal chamber structure in a half-section cross-cut.

Fossil Type: Ammonite (cut and polished half-section)

Species: Indeterminate (commonly associated genera from Burton Bradstock include Stephanoceras and Parkinsonia)

Geological Stage: Middle Jurassic (Bajocian Stage)

Zone: Approx. Humphriesianum or Parkinsoni Zones (subject to stratigraphic layer)

Biozone: Not formally assigned; Burton Bradstock exposures show multiple ammonite-bearing horizons

Depositional Environment: Shallow marine shelf – fine-grained silty mudstones and sandy limestone beds with excellent fossil preservation

Location: Burton Bradstock, Dorset, United Kingdom

Order: Ammonitida (extinct marine cephalopods)

Superfamily and Family: Likely Stephanoceratoidea (based on typical regional finds)

Formally Identified By: Not assigned (regional ammonites in this area commonly studied and identified by palaeontologists such as S.S. Buckman and W.J. Arkell)

Morphology Features: This specimen showcases the classic ammonite planispiral shell morphology with a prominent ribbed exterior and well-developed suture lines, now visible internally due to the polished cut. The exposed inner chambers often show calcite infill, crystalline features, and subtle coloration due to mineral replacement over millions of years.

Geological Context: The Middle Bajocian represents a diverse marine fauna interval of the Jurassic, with ammonites serving as key biostratigraphic markers. The Burton Bradstock Formation includes alternating beds of limestone and marl, deposited in a calm, shallow marine setting conducive to the excellent preservation of ammonites and other invertebrate fossils.

Condition: Polished, half-section, with visible chamber detail. Actual specimen shown in listing photos. Scale rule square/cube = 1cm. See image for full sizing.

Important Note:

All of our Fossils are 100% Genuine Specimens & come with a Certificate of Authenticity.

A scientifically valuable and visually striking ammonite fossil—perfect for collectors, interior display, or educational use.
