Description

Ruby – Natural Corundum Crystal from Madagascar

This Ruby specimen is a genuine natural mineral sourced from Madagascar, a region renowned for producing richly coloured corundum crystals. The photograph shows the exact piece you will receive, carefully selected for its colour, crystal structure, and natural character. Full sizing details are available in the listing photos to provide accurate scale and proportions.

Your specimen includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming it as a genuine Ruby mineral example.

Mineral Species & Scientific Classification

Ruby is the red variety of Corundum, with the chemical formula Al₂O₃ (aluminium oxide). It belongs to the oxide mineral group and crystallises in the trigonal crystal system. Corundum commonly forms hexagonal prismatic crystals, tabular crystals, or granular masses depending on the geological environment.

The red colour of Ruby is caused by trace amounts of chromium substituting for aluminium within the crystal lattice. The intensity of the red hue can range from pinkish-red to deep crimson depending on chromium concentration and crystal structure.

With a Mohs hardness of 9, Ruby is one of the hardest naturally occurring minerals, second only to diamond. It exhibits a vitreous to subadamantine lustre and has no true cleavage, instead showing parting and uneven fracture.

Colour, Crystal Habit & Natural Features

Madagascar Rubies are known for their attractive red tones, sometimes displaying subtle zoning or internal growth patterns. Specimens may be translucent to opaque depending on the crystal quality and formation conditions.

Natural inclusions such as rutile needles, mineral veils, or internal fractures may be visible and are characteristic of corundum formation. These inclusions can contribute to the individuality of each specimen and confirm its natural origin.

This Ruby is presented in its natural mineral state and has not been artificially dyed or altered. Any surface textures or contact points are part of its geological development.

Geological Formation – Madagascar

Ruby forms primarily in metamorphic environments, particularly within marble and high-grade metamorphic rocks, as well as in certain igneous settings. In Madagascar, ruby deposits are commonly associated with metamorphosed limestone and aluminium-rich rock units subjected to high temperature and pressure.

During metamorphism, aluminium-rich minerals recrystallise to form corundum under suitable conditions. When chromium is present in the geological environment, red ruby crystals develop within the host rock.

Madagascar has become an important global source of ruby due to its favourable geological conditions and the quality of its corundum deposits.

Collecting, Display & Traditional Associations

Ruby is highly valued by mineral collectors for its durability, vibrant colour, and classic trigonal crystal structure. A Madagascar Ruby specimen adds regional interest and geological significance to any mineral collection.

Its rich red colour makes it a striking display piece for cabinets, desks, or curated crystal arrangements.

In various traditions, Ruby has been traditionally associated with vitality and passion in symbolic spiritual practices. These associations are spiritual in nature and reflect cultural interpretations of red gemstones.
