Description

Kimberlite – Natural Volcanic Rock from South Africa

This Kimberlite specimen is a genuine natural volcanic rock sourced from South Africa, one of the world’s most historically significant regions for kimberlite pipes. The photograph shows the exact specimen you will receive, carefully selected for its texture, mineral content, and geological character. Full sizing details are available in the listing photos to provide accurate scale and proportions.

Your specimen includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming it as a genuine Kimberlite example.

Rock Type & Geological Classification

Kimberlite is an ultramafic, potassic volcanic rock best known as the primary host rock for diamonds. It forms deep within the Earth’s mantle and is transported rapidly to the surface through explosive volcanic eruptions. Unlike a single mineral species, Kimberlite is a composite igneous rock composed of multiple minerals.

Typical mineral components include olivine, phlogopite mica, pyroxene, serpentine, calcite, and various accessory mantle-derived minerals. The rock often contains rounded xenocrysts and xenoliths—fragments of mantle material carried upward during eruption.

Kimberlite does not crystallise in a single crystal system, as it is a rock composed of different mineral species. Its texture can range from fine-grained to porphyritic, often with visible olivine crystals set within a darker groundmass.

Appearance, Texture & Mineral Content

South African Kimberlite commonly displays a grey, greenish, or bluish-grey matrix, sometimes referred to historically as “blue ground” when freshly mined. Weathered Kimberlite may appear more yellowish or brown due to surface alteration.

Visible olivine crystals are often altered to serpentine, giving the rock a mottled appearance. Small mineral inclusions and fragmental textures reflect its explosive volcanic origin. The surface may show natural fractures, mineral grains, and varying grain sizes consistent with its rapid emplacement.

This specimen is natural and untreated, preserving the authentic texture and mineral composition formed during deep mantle processes.

Geological Origin – South Africa

South Africa is globally renowned for its Kimberlite pipes, particularly in regions such as Kimberley, which gave the rock its name. Kimberlite pipes form when volatile-rich magma originating at depths exceeding 150 kilometres rises rapidly through the crust.

The rapid ascent preserves high-pressure mantle minerals and occasionally diamonds within the rock. These vertical pipe structures are carrot-shaped and represent some of the most important geological features in economic geology.

The study of Kimberlite provides valuable insights into mantle composition, deep Earth processes, and volcanic eruption dynamics.

Collecting, Display & Educational Interest

Kimberlite is highly sought after by collectors interested in volcanic rocks, mantle-derived materials, and the geology of diamond formation. A South African specimen carries particular historical and geological significance due to the region’s mining heritage.

This piece is ideal for display in mineral cabinets, educational collections, or as part of a themed geological set focusing on igneous rocks and deep Earth processes.

In various traditions, volcanic stones have been traditionally associated with strength and transformation in symbolic contexts. These associations are spiritual in nature and reflect cultural interpretations of volcanic materials.
