Description

Snowflake Obsidian Faceted Pendulum – Natural Volcanic Glass

This Snowflake Obsidian faceted pendulum is crafted from genuine natural volcanic glass, selected for its distinctive white crystalline patterns set against a deep black background. The photograph shows the exact pendulum you will receive, carefully chosen for its contrast, polish, and symmetry. Full sizing details are available in the listing photos to provide accurate scale.

Your pendulum includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming it as a genuine Snowflake Obsidian specimen.

Mineral Type & Geological Classification

Snowflake Obsidian is a natural form of volcanic glass formed from rapidly cooled silica-rich lava. Unlike crystalline minerals, obsidian does not have an ordered crystal structure and is classified as an amorphous mineraloid rather than a true mineral.

Its composition is predominantly silicon dioxide (SiO₂), similar in chemistry to quartz, but its rapid cooling prevents crystal formation. The characteristic “snowflake” patterns are created by small white or grey radial crystal clusters of cristobalite, a crystalline silica polymorph that forms within the glass over time as it devitrifies.

Obsidian typically has a hardness of around 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale and displays a vitreous, glass-like lustre with conchoidal fracture.

Appearance, Pattern & Surface Finish

Snowflake Obsidian is recognised for its dramatic contrast between glossy black volcanic glass and pale grey to white cristobalite inclusions. These inclusions often form rounded, flower-like or snowflake-shaped patterns distributed throughout the stone.

This pendulum has been precision faceted to enhance balance and reflect light across the polished surface. The faceting highlights the natural snowflake patterns while maintaining the stone’s smooth, glassy finish. No artificial dyes or enhancements are present; the colour and pattern are entirely natural.

The pointed pendulum shape allows for an even swing when suspended, making it both visually appealing and functional.

Geological Formation

Obsidian forms during volcanic eruptions when silica-rich lava cools extremely quickly, preventing the formation of visible crystals. Over time, microscopic crystallisation processes can occur within the glass, forming cristobalite clusters that create the snowflake effect.

Snowflake Obsidian is commonly associated with rhyolitic lava flows and volcanic regions worldwide. It may occur alongside pumice, rhyolite, and other volcanic rocks within igneous environments.

The development of cristobalite inclusions gives each piece a unique distribution of patterns, ensuring no two specimens are identical.

Pendulum Use & Collecting Appeal

Pendulums have been traditionally associated with spiritual and divination practices across various cultures. They are often used as symbolic tools during meditation or reflective routines. These associations are spiritual in nature and reflect longstanding traditions involving natural stones.

Beyond spiritual use, this Snowflake Obsidian pendulum is an attractive addition to any mineral or volcanic rock collection. Its bold pattern and polished faceted form make it suitable for display when not in use.

It also makes a thoughtful gift for collectors, geology enthusiasts, or anyone interested in volcanic materials and natural glass formations.
