Mineral Type & Scientific Classification

Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony, the microcrystalline form of Quartz (SiO₂). It belongs to the tectosilicate mineral class and crystallises in the trigonal crystal system, although its crystals are microscopic and intergrown, creating a dense, smooth structure rather than visible crystal faces.

The distinctive red, orange, and amber hues of Carnelian are caused by iron oxide inclusions dispersed throughout the silica matrix. Variations in iron content and oxidation state influence whether the stone appears pale orange, honey-toned, deep red, or reddish-brown.

With a Mohs hardness of approximately 6.5 to 7, Carnelian is durable and well suited to polishing. It displays a vitreous to waxy lustre and a conchoidal fracture typical of quartz varieties.

Colour, Clarity & Surface Characteristics

Carnelian typically ranges from translucent orange to deep red, sometimes displaying subtle banding or internal cloud-like formations. Some specimens reveal gentle translucency when held to light, especially along thinner edges.

This polished pebble has been shaped to enhance both tactile comfort and visual appeal. The smooth surface brings out the natural depth of colour while preserving the mineral’s internal features. The polish accentuates its warm tones without altering its natural composition.

No artificial dyes or surface treatments are present. The colour is entirely the result of natural geological processes.

Geological Formation

Carnelian forms in volcanic and sedimentary environments where silica-rich fluids fill cavities, fractures, or vesicles within host rock. Over extended geological periods, microscopic layers of quartz accumulate and solidify into chalcedony.

Iron-bearing minerals present during formation become incorporated into the silica, producing the characteristic red and orange shades. Carnelian is often found in association with agate, jasper, and other quartz varieties within basaltic volcanic rocks.

The formation process may take millions of years, resulting in dense, fine-grained material ideal for shaping and polishing.

Polished Pebble Form & Collecting Appeal

Polished Carnelian pebbles are popular among mineral collectors and those who appreciate smooth, naturally coloured quartz specimens. The rounded form fits comfortably in the hand and makes an attractive decorative piece for desks, shelves, or display cabinets.

Carnelian has been traditionally associated with motivation and vitality in various spiritual traditions. These associations are spiritual in nature and reflect cultural interpretations of red and orange stones.

Its vibrant colouring and durability also make it a thoughtful gift for geology enthusiasts, crystal collectors, or anyone who appreciates naturally formed minerals.
