Size (picture scale cube=1cm):   44 x 33 x 27mm (1.73 x 1.3 x 1.06 inches)

These are special extra large Tumblestone Pebbles that have been produced from some of the most beautiful, and sometimes hard to obtain, minerals from around the world. These specimens are sold as individual stones.

Tumblestones or ‘tumbled stones’ as they are also referred to are made by ‘tumbling’ rough crystals, minerals or rocks in grit for a number of days in a tumbler machine. Different grades of grit are used in the process until the rough edges are smoothed, then polish is added to bring a soft shiny surface to the specimen. Because of this process each stone will be unique in shape and colour.

Carnelian is a brownish-red mineral which is commonly used as a semi-precious gemstone. Carnelian is a variation of the silica mineral chalcedony coloured by impurities of iron oxide.

ACTUAL AS SEEN: The image shows the EXACT specimen you will receive. The specimen has been carefully hand selected and photographed. Measurements are as accurate as possible, though be aware measuring precise dimensions can be difficult from irregular shaped items. Whilst we portray colours as close to life-like as we can, colours will vary if taken in sunlight, indoors, from monitor to monitor and device to device. Once this specimen is sold, we will update this listing with new similar selected item, with a new photo and dimensions.

Mineral Species & Scientific Background

Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony, which itself is a microcrystalline form of quartz composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Chalcedony forms in the trigonal crystal system and consists of extremely fine intergrowths of quartz and moganite. Unlike large, visible quartz crystals, chalcedony displays a smooth, compact texture due to its microscopic crystal structure.

The distinctive orange, red, and amber hues of carnelian are caused by the presence of iron oxide impurities within the silica matrix. Colour intensity can range from pale peach and honey-orange to deep burnt orange and reddish-brown. Some specimens display gentle internal clouding or faint banding typical of chalcedony formation.

With a Mohs hardness of approximately 6.5–7, carnelian is durable and well suited for polishing, tumbling, and ornamental carving.

Geological Formation & Occurrence

Carnelian typically forms in volcanic and sedimentary environments where silica-rich fluids fill cavities, fractures, and voids within host rock. Over time, these fluids slowly deposit layers of microcrystalline quartz, creating nodules and agate formations. Iron content within the surrounding rock or groundwater contributes to the stone’s warm colour palette.

It is commonly associated with other quartz varieties such as agate, jasper, and amethyst, and may occur alongside minerals including calcite and hematite. Natural carnelian can sometimes deepen in colour when exposed to heat, either through geological processes or traditional lapidary techniques.

Finish, Texture & Visual Appeal

This polished pebble has been finished to a smooth, tactile surface that highlights the depth and warmth of the stone’s colour. The polish enhances its natural translucency, particularly around thinner edges where light may gently pass through the stone.

Carnelian often exhibits a soft vitreous to waxy lustre due to its chalcedony structure. The rounded pebble shape makes it comfortable to hold and visually pleasing for display in mineral collections, decorative bowls, or curated crystal arrangements.

Each piece is unique, with natural variations in tone, internal patterning, and clarity.

Historical & Traditional Context

Carnelian has been used since antiquity in jewellery, seals, beads, and decorative carvings. Ancient civilisations valued it for ornamental purposes and symbolic meaning. In various traditions, it has been traditionally associated with vitality, creativity, and spiritual symbolism. Such associations are cultural and belief-based rather than scientific claims.

Today, polished carnelian pebbles remain popular among mineral collectors, gemstone enthusiasts, and those who appreciate natural decorative stones.
