Description

Calcite Crystals – Natural Mineral Specimen

This Calcite crystal is a genuine natural mineral specimen, carefully selected for its crystal structure, clarity, and overall display quality. The photographs in the listing show the exact specimen you will receive. Please refer to the images for full sizing and scale details.

Each crystal includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming it as a genuine calcite specimen.

Mineral Species & Crystal Structure

Calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral with the chemical formula CaCO₃. It crystallises in the trigonal crystal system and most commonly forms rhombohedral crystals, though scalenohedral, prismatic, tabular, and blocky habits are also well documented.

With a Mohs hardness of 3, calcite is softer than many silicate minerals but is one of the most important rock-forming minerals on Earth. It displays a vitreous to pearly lustre and is known for its perfect rhombohedral cleavage in three directions.

Calcite is also famous for its optical properties. Transparent varieties can exhibit double refraction, where objects viewed through the crystal appear doubled due to birefringence. This optical feature makes calcite particularly interesting for educational and mineralogical study.

Colour, Clarity & Natural Features

Calcite occurs in a wide range of natural colours including clear, white, honey, orange, yellow, green, blue, and pink, depending on trace elements and formation conditions. This specimen displays natural colouration formed during crystallisation.

Transparency can range from fully transparent to translucent. Internal inclusions, growth zoning, or minor surface contact points are common features of naturally formed calcite and reflect its geological development.

Crystal faces may show subtle striations or growth patterns, while cleavage surfaces can create smooth reflective planes. These characteristics are natural properties of calcite and confirm its authenticity.

No artificial dyes or enhancements have been applied.

Geological Formation

Calcite forms in a wide variety of geological environments. It is the principal mineral component of limestone and marble and commonly develops in sedimentary, metamorphic, and hydrothermal settings.

In sedimentary environments, calcite can precipitate from calcium-rich waters, forming limestone deposits. In hydrothermal veins, mineral-rich fluids deposit calcite crystals in open cavities and fractures. In metamorphic environments, limestone recrystallises into marble, composed largely of calcite.

Well-formed crystal specimens often originate from hydrothermal vein systems, where stable growth conditions allow distinct crystal faces to develop.

Collecting, Display & Educational Value

A calcite crystal is a classic addition to any mineral cabinet, geology collection, or educational display. Its crystal symmetry and cleavage properties make it an excellent example for demonstrating mineral structure and crystallography.

In various traditions, calcite is traditionally associated with clarity and balance; however, it is primarily valued as a naturally formed mineral specimen and one of the most significant carbonate minerals in Earth’s crust.

This carefully chosen specimen is ideal for collectors, students of geology, or as a distinctive natural gift.
