Description

Agate Slice 3–4 Inch – Natural Banded Chalcedony Quartz Mineral

This Agate Slice (approximately 3–4 inches) is a genuine natural mineral specimen, showcasing the distinctive banding and colour patterns that make agate one of the most admired varieties of chalcedony. The photograph shows the exact slice you will receive, carefully selected for its pattern, colour contrast, and finish. Full sizing details are available in the listing photos. Your specimen includes a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee generic card, confirming it as an authentic natural stone.

Mineral Type & Crystal Structure

Agate is a variety of chalcedony, which is a microcrystalline form of Quartz composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Unlike large, well-formed quartz crystals, chalcedony consists of extremely fine intergrowths of quartz and moganite. At the microscopic level, it belongs to the trigonal crystal system.

Agate is characterised by its layered or banded structure, formed through rhythmic deposition of silica from mineral-rich fluids. These bands may appear in concentric, fortification-style, or irregular patterns. Colours can range widely, including white, grey, brown, red, orange, blue, and cream, depending on trace elements and mineral inclusions present during formation.

With a Mohs hardness of approximately 6.5–7, agate is durable and takes an excellent polish, resulting in a smooth, glossy surface that enhances its natural banding.

Formation & Geological Origin

Agate typically forms within cavities of volcanic rocks such as basalt. When silica-rich groundwater flows into these cavities, it deposits successive layers of chalcedony over time. Variations in mineral content, temperature, and chemical conditions during deposition create the distinctive banding patterns.

As the cavity gradually fills, concentric layers build inward from the outer walls. In some specimens, the centre may remain hollow or become filled with crystalline quartz. Associated minerals may include amethyst, calcite, jasper, and other silica-based varieties.

Agate deposits are found worldwide, with notable sources including Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, Mexico, and parts of the United States.

Appearance & Finish

This agate slice has been cut from a larger nodule and polished to reveal its internal banding structure. The polished faces highlight the intricate layering, while the natural outer edge often retains a more textured appearance, preserving the character of the original nodule.

Depending on the specimen, the slice may be translucent when held to light, allowing the bands to glow softly. Natural inclusions, subtle colour gradients, and variations in band thickness are part of the stone’s geological history and make each piece unique.

Some agate slices on the market are dyed to enhance colour contrast. Where applicable, this is a common and widely accepted practice in the decorative stone trade. The focus of this listing is the natural mineral structure and visual appeal of the individual specimen shown.

Traditional & Decorative Appeal

Agate has been used for thousands of years in decorative objects, jewellery, and ornamental carvings. It has been traditionally associated in various cultures with balance and stability in symbolic contexts. These associations are cultural and spiritual rather than scientific.

Today, agate slices are popular as display pieces, desk décor, paperweights, photography props, and additions to mineral collections due to their striking natural patterns.

Ideal for Collectors & Gifting

This 3–4 inch Agate Slice makes a beautiful addition to any mineral collection or interior décor arrangement. Its natural banding and polished finish create an eye-catching focal point whether displayed on a stand, shelf, or cabinet.

You will receive the exact specimen shown in the photographs, securely packaged and presented with a Certificate of Authenticity lifetime guarantee card. A genuine agate chalcedony mineral slice, selected for quality, structure, and visual character.
